Apple's iPad education sales double, outperform Mac 2-to-1 | All about Apple's New Move in Digital Textbooks | Scoop.it

Apple on Tuesday announced the iPad is quickly becoming the company's strongest asset in the education market as sales nearly doubled from a year ago, meaning the tablet outperformed even portable Macs in the segment for the quarter ending in June. Driving the iPad's high education adoption rate was the cheaper iPad 2, a carry-over model priced at $399 targeted at entry-level consumers and students.

UM Professor One Of First To Create Digital Textbook - UM News - The University Of Montana | All about Apple's New Move in Digital Textbooks | Scoop.it

The iPad application is where the real evolution is happening because students can interact with the material. Emerging Battles Over Textbooks: Options from Apple to Open Initiatives | College Open Textbooks BLOG | All about Apple's New Move in Digital Textbooks | Scoop.it

To evaluate Apple’s textbook strategy, compare it to the goals of the “One Laptop Per Child” initiative. The biggest problem with the Apple initiative–missed by most commentators—is that the iPad is an entertainment device, and has many interesting ways to interact with content but not to create it. In contrast, OLPC’s XO system was planned from the start to let children create and share text, video, and other content. It is an empowerment device.
