No Longer a Luxury: Digital Literacy Can’t Wait

Digital literacy is about more than just adding technology into the teaching we already do. The following common teaching practices that we have seen in classrooms as researchers and as parents of school-age children do not help develop digital literacy and may even kill students’ motivation to develop their savvy use of technology and the Internet. We must stop these practices. Immediately.

Bonnie I agree parents are important today so many seem to be tuned out to the needs of there children, it is a lot more than just material needs, that parents need to provide, and with the prevalence of single parent homes, it is even harder. I feel as much for the parent of these homes as I do for the children it can not be easy wearing all the hats.

I have long hours of work in places where the parents did not or would not participate. Sometimes they did not know. Some groups like Wired Safety , have Mom groups.. or PTA groups. Thanks for your comment.

It's absolutely devastating what happened to Nepal. Any loss of life is a tragedy but loss of this scale is unimaginable. It's going to be a difficult rebuilding process for the Nepalese whether that's coping with the loss or physically rebuilding the nation.

 

Watching footage of shakes, what struck me the most was hundreds of year old temples crumbling. Those just aren't something you can easily rebuild. The building can eventually be replaced but the significance of it is almost lost. 

 

Those temples, like the homes in the area, were most likely not built up to a standard that could withstand earthquakes or at least earthquakes of this magnitude. It's easy to see how destruction on this scale can occur in large urban populations that were not designed to stand against such a dramatic event.

I've experienced earthquakes more times than I've ever felt the need.  We used to get them all the time it seemed in Japan.  My bed would role across the room.  It got to the point where I just slept through them.  If I had even felt a shake half as violent as what Nepal went through I could not even imagine the fright.  I wonder how long the India and Eurasia tectonic plates will stay on top of each other?  Or if a few more earth quakes will split the area?

They don’t necessarily think everyone’s the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it (Morehead 2012).

Bioman Biology is a nice resource that I learned about from David Andrade. On Bioman Biology you will find dozens of educational games and virtual labs designed to help students learn about topics related to biology. The games and virtual labs are organized into eight topics; physiology, cells, ecology, genetics, classification, life chemistry, respiration, and scientific methods. Most the games are Flash-based but a handful of them are available as free iPad apps. The games and virtual labs are appropriate for middle school students.

Here’s a great resource: the Teaching Practices Inventory. It’s an inventory that lists and scores the extent to which research-based teaching practices are being used. It’s been developed for use in math and science courses, but researchers Carl Wieman and Sarah Gilbert suggest it can be used in engineering and social sciences courses, although they have not tested it there. I suspect it has an even wider application. Most of the items on the inventory are or could be practiced in most disciplines and programs

Authentic, learner-centered, collaborative assessment alternatives
Alternative assessment methods such as writing assignments, collaborative assignments, case studies, and debates can avoid the problems often associated with tests and quizzes. “There are many ways to approach assessment. It depends on the context of the course. When we teach faculty how to teach online, we try to give them a taste of a majority of those methods. I don’t know that we can cover all of them in one course, but there are multiple ways to get at the issues and make this a real-life situation for the students so they can actually learn from the process,” Pratt says.
Palloff and Pratt recommend selecting assessment methods that are learner-centered and authentic.

Moodle is a magnificent free product and has the potential to enable schools and teachers to build wonderfully unique interactive online learning courses in which learner interaction can be tracked, measured and responded to. Despite this the vast majority of Moodle courses I see are a long list of Word and PDF documents with at best a few forums that enable a minimum of human social interaction.

Problems and possibilities of Moodle (and other similar platforms) outlined by Nik Peachey:

 

* Why Moodle courses often suck?

Not so intuitive platform to work with, lack of teacher training and skills to create online learning material (I agree with these points), excess security issues.

 

* What to do to improve.

 

* Comment about ready-made courses.

There are various problems, for example these often contain little student-teacher or peer interaction. I agree that the ready-made digital material, in my experience, is not very personalisable (and therefore difficult to teach in an inspired way).

 

* How to develop your Moodle skills?

The post gives 9 links to practical video tutorials (how to create a quiz, add a youtube, etc.). There are also free Moodle platforms to practice.
