iPads in Education- Examples from the Classroom

Let's look at the way we use iPads in the classroom. Are there merely a tool to automate traditionally taught tasks?

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders @gcouros

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders @gcouros | Alive and Learning | Scoop.it
George Couros (@gcouros on Twitter) is the Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division, a large district near Edmonton, Alberta.

As many school administrators are enjoying their summer break, we all tend to think of ways that we can make our school better in the upcoming year. Often, I point school principals and district leaders to a powerful post by Will Richardson that helps us point the finger right at ourselves when we are looking to push our school ahead. Richardson states:

"Meaningful change ain't gonna happen for our kids if we're not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it's not about schools . . . it's about us."

Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome

Engagement is not a goal it's an outcome | Alive and Learning | Scoop.it

You often hear people talk about how technology is so “engaging” for kids. But that misses the point. It’s not the technology that’s engaging, it’s the opportunity to use technology to create something that is valued by the community and by yourself. Yes, a new device can be entertaining for a while, but when the novelty value wears off, what are you left with?

Fighting Procrastination: A Way to Trick your Brain

Fighting Procrastination: A Way to Trick your Brain | Alive and Learning | Scoop.it

One of the hardest maladies for any business person to overcome is, that proven productivity destroyer, procrastination.

Assisting clients to stop being lifelong procrastinators, is one of the more difficult challenges faced by consultants and business coaches, and unless the client is open to changing it can prove to be an almost impossible task.

This good article, offers a different perspective on the subject, and it suggests a simple do it yourself means of fighting the ever present temptation to defer action till a later time.

Judith Vasquez's curator insight, April 4, 12:59 AM
Procrastination is my biggest enemy. I put off things to do and I'm conscious of what I’m doing, but I lie to myself and say "I'll do it later." Then the outcome is me trying to finish something last minute and causing unnecessary stress on myself. I know what I should do like make a planner, and things like that, which is why I decided to read this article because it says “A Way to Trick your Brain,” which is something I didn’t know and though might be helpful. What the author basically explained is that the more we repeat what we need to do to ourselves, the more hectic a task seems to our brain. The harder the task seems to us, the more likely it is that we’ll procrastinate in doing it. So she suggests to complete the task right away, or write it down. This is helpful for me because I tend to not do even the easiest things for no reason. I find this credible because the author described her past experience with this and how she managed many tasks using this method.

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment | Alive and Learning | Scoop.it

Over the last decade conversations have been about analyzing the data to improve test scores.  The time has come to change the conversation to "The Learner" who has been the missing piece.  Once we understand the learner and how they learn, then transformation of our educational systems can begin.

The learner needs to be part of the daily conversations from now on:  no longer The Missing Piece.

Questions to consider when moving to a learner-centered environment:

> Who are the learners today?
> How do learners learn best?
> How do we meet the needs of the diverse learners in the classroom?
> What is the new role of the teacher?
> How is the role of the learner changing?
> Why is there a culture shift with these new roles?
> How can teachers and learners be partners in lesson design?
> How will teachers prepare to be the guide and partner in learning?
> How will learners express their understanding of what they know?
> What learning environment will be created for these learners?

Researchers Philip Mazzocco and Melanie Green draw a contrast between rhetorical persuasion, in essence arguing with facts and logic, and the use of narratives to influence decisions. They conclude that stories are more effective at changing emotional beliefs that logical arguments have difficulty reaching.

Three Reasons Why Leaders Fail

Three Reasons Why Leaders Fail | Alive and Learning | Scoop.it
It is unrealistic to expect that all forms of leadership are successful—because they are not.

It is unrealistic to expect that all forms of leadership are successful—because they are not. The nature of leadership is such that leaders are going to take risks and fail. An effective leader learns from failure and moves forward. However, there are failures in leadership not associated with risk taking that can undermine and paralyze an organization.

With any leadership failure, one must strive to distill the reasons and causes behind it. Such failures prevent leaders and their organizations from moving forward because the subsequent barriers and voids stifle a company’s ability to seek new opportunities. Consequently, the company will not be able to take advantage of situations that increase its competitiveness, productivity and market strength.
