Hazza Bin Zayed (HBZ) Stadium

Hazza Bin Zayed (HBZ) Stadium | Architecture, design & algorithms | Scoop.it
This is the first built project of Pattern Design, a London-based architectural start-up practice specialising in rule-based design.

Our Philosophy:

• Designs that achieve equilibrium between man-made structures and the natural world.
• Employ the idea of patterns in nature to analyse all aspects of a project.
• Mathematics and beauty are key research areas for the practice.
• Buildings that enhance the user experience by addressing well-being and visual harmony.

Our Design:

Until our HBZ Stadium, all Middle East stadia seemed to mimic a European temperate climate model. Pattern rejected this notion and created an innovative design rooted in the hot dry climate of the region.

The symbolic element of the plan is the internal and external double “skin” honeycomb motif that wraps up the structure. Through its double-layering, the “skin” allows natural light in, thus creating light effects within the internal spaces. The cladding is made of alveolus-shaped metal and glass panels of different size that can be partially opened.

A really simple method with great effect. Shoot rays from your building out and see if they reach a desired view. The grasshopper definition looks way too complicated. I still believe an actual script can be far more compact (I actually have written a very similar script to evaluate daylight availability: How much of the sky does a location on a building see? Same concept, different problem).
