Are parents who refuse to let their children take the Common Core Assessments setting a precedent that will encourage opting out of parts of the educational process that they don't like or understand? A parent in this article voices a concern that children are being treated as guinea pig. What is it about this reform that inspires so much outrage?

Play is the thing for these European education startups

Another startup looking to gaming to engage pupils is WeWantToKnow, which teaches algebra.
Harriette Knight's insight:

What exactly is play? Do students and teachers agree on when they are actually engaged in play? About a decade ago, I began to advocate for the use of online games (developed by teachers) to review key concepts and skills learned in algebra. I now would like to see learning through play evolve into using the algebraic concepts to actually play the game.

My next step is to investigate apps like Angry Birds to see its application to key skills and concepts in algebra 1 and 2. It's all about the student. How will they respond to gamification beyond review games such as Jeopardy and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

One of the Common Core Standards focuses on Seeing Structure in equations and expressions. When the focus is on structure instead of the memorization of skills, the power of mathematics becomes a reality. Math is not a series of meaningless step. Harriette Knight's insight:

This slideshow demonstrates the use of visual slides to support a key concept in algebra one - slope. The slope-intercept formula is used to derive the well-known formula that converts Celsius to Fahrenheit temperature.

I believe that more emphasis should be placed on identifying dependent and independent variables and less on working with numbers identified solely as x- and y- coordinates.

Understanding is the key word. Simply knowing how to get the right answer to problems involving fractions is of no great benefit when tackling algebraic fractions. There's simply not enough carry-over of key ideas nothing to build on.
