Sense, not sobriety, should be crux of debate (NSW)

The debate that has followed the death of Thomas Kelly about how to stem  alcohol-related violence in the city is a worthy one.  I live a few blocks from Kings Cross and regularly walk home through  urine-soaked, vomit-splattered streets late on Saturday night, trying not to  make eye-contact with the drunk boofheads milling on corners. It's an entirely  unpleasant, combustible atmosphere.

The morning after Salvatore Marchese left his mother's house for a session of outpatient treatment for his heroin addiction, he was found slumped behind the wheel of her car, dead of an overdose. He apparently hadn't been alone: His wallet was missing and the car's passenger seat was left in a reclined position. But whoever was with him when he was using drugs was long gone by the time the police arrived.

Reveller's near-deadly Civic assault (ACT)

A drunken, unprovoked king-hit in a Civic nightclub could have killed this  man earlier this year.  This victim, who does not want to be identified, was drinking with friends  when he was mistaken for the friend of another young reveller who was flirting  with a third man's girlfriend inside the club.

DOCTORS are calling for Australian governments to introduce needle and syringe programs to prisons amid fears they have become a ''hot bed'' for blood-borne viruses, especially hepatitis C.

The call, supported by eminent scientists Peter Doherty and Sir Gustav Nossal, comes as a Victorian prisoner prepares to sue the state government for allegedly failing to protect him from hepatitis C in one of the state's 14 jails.

There is nothing politically easier in most countries than scapegoating drugs and drug users as the source of all social problems. Politicians can expect a boost in their popularity when they support repressive measures against drugs and are dismissive of public services for people who use illicit drugs. But visionary policy-makers in the Czech Republic—from the early years after four decades of Soviet occupation to the present day—have resisted what is politically easy and exemplified what is smart and humane in drug policy. Their story is the subject of a new report from the Open Society Foundations Global Drug Policy Program.

SMOKING rates have dropped below 15 per cent for the first time in Victoria,  and young adults are no longer the most likely to smoke.  Figures released yesterday show that 14.4 per cent of Victorians were regular  smokers last year - down from 15.3 per cent in 2010 and 21.2 per cent in 1998,  when the Quit Victoria survey began.

The Knesset, Israel’s government, has approved further restrictions on alcohol marketing. All alcohol marketing on billboards and public transport will be prohibited, while media outlets are only allowed to present strictly 'informative' advertisements, without models, text, or praise for the product.
