Police close in on cook of deadly batch of ice (Vic)

Police close in on cook of deadly batch of ice (Vic) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
It is a tragic but hardly surprising reality that ice use ruins lives. It is rare, however, that smoking ice kills someone; it is the gradual failure of organs, or the recklessness of those under its influence, that usually gets an ice addict.
ReGenUC's insight:

Highlighting the ongoing frustration and trauma for families who lose a loved one to overdose or other drug-related events. See some of the original coverage: http://sco.lt/5xyTbt.

Blackout: Coming out of the fog in the middle of sex with a stranger (USA) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
WHEN the fog lifted, Sarah Hepola found herself having sex with a man she didn’t recognise.
ReGenUC's insight:

Ms Hepola's story is a common one and reflects the broad evidence on changing patterns of alcohol consumption by women. Longitudinal data shows a gradual convergence of men's and women's drinking behaviour, with obvious increases in harm for women. If you (or someone you care about) is struggling with the impacts of their drinking, give us a call (1800 700 514).

Ice-addicted Australians choosing Bali and Thailand for cheaper treatment

Ice-addicted Australians choosing Bali and Thailand for cheaper treatment | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Bali and Thailand - the preferred escape for Australians wanting cheap dental work and plastic surgery - has now become a destination for ice addicts wanting rehabilitation.
ReGenUC's insight:

There's a few stories here: local treatment shortages, growth in 'medical tourism' by Australians and the financial impacts on families affected by AOD dependence. While there are obvious capacity issues, it's important to remember that there is a range of free, evidence-based treatment options available in Victoria and around Australia. The Victorian Government's recent announcement of new funding for non-residential rehabilitation programs around the state should see a significant improvement (500 new places per year) in the availability of free treatment for people in Victoria, particularly in regional and rural areas where service shortages have been most evident. As a result of the funding, we'll be expanding our Catalyst non-resi rehab program to Narre Warren in October (http://sco.lt/5QOPbd). For more info about the other locations and providers of the new programs, see the Govt's Ice Action Plan website: http://ice.vic.gov.au/.

Victoria's most disadvantaged postcodes not improving: report

Victoria's most disadvantaged postcodes not improving: report | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Victoria's most disadvantaged communities have shown little sign of improvement over the past 15 years, a new report shows.
ReGenUC's insight:

The new Jesuit Social Services/Catholic Social Services report highlights clear issues in Melbourne's north, placing Broadmeadows, Coolaroo, Campbellfield in the 10 most disadvantaged. The links between disadvantage and AOD use are well established. We also know that alcohol outlet density tends to be most concentrated in disadvantaged areas. Voters are adults and don't need a nanny state to make choices for them (Aus)

Voters are adults and don't need a nanny state to make choices for them (Aus) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
If we persist in thinking people cannot make simple decisions, why then do we think they can do something as complicated as choosing between different political visions?
ReGenUC's insight:

Senator Leyonhjelm makes his case against public health 'puritanism'. While the tone of some public health advocacy can be criticised for seeking to own the moral high ground, the evidence for measures such as lockouts (and the lack of clear evidence on the longer term impacts of e-cigarettes on health) support the measures the Senator sees as creating a 'nanny state'. It's worth noting that the 'freedom to choose' argument is typically used by alcohol and tobacco industries in resisting restrictions on the sale and promotion of their products. See Monday's related post: http://sco.lt/59ZwCP.
