ReGenUC's insight:

An unusual one from Andrew Bolt. A mixture of his usual hyperstigmatisation, empathy with offenders and a call for more love in our society.

Texas And Kansas Approves Bills For Drug Testing Welfare Recipients

The Texas Senate Health and Human Services Committee and Kansas House have approved bills that require drug screening welfare applicants before receiving benefits.
Chad Smith's curator insight, May 9, 2013 11:17 AM

Some Texas welfare recepients are soon going to be required to go through a drug test in order to receive any benefits. In March, Texas has passed a bill that will now require drug tests for all recepients to ensure that the government money they receive is not going towards drugs. The Texas government believes that this will help recepients find good jobs and receive treatment for drug usage. Anyone who fails the test will be required a mandatory job search and treatment. Out of 4,086 people who were tested in the Sunshine State, only 180 failed costing the state $45,780.

I feel that more states should be required to pass bills requiring all welfare recepients to be drug tested before receiving any benefits. The benefits recepients receive are to help the family get better while the adults should still be lookng for a job. Today, recepients do not look for jobs because they depend on the governments money instead of working for the things they want in life. I feel that our government needs a change before more and more people solely depend on government money.

Alice Fox's curator insight, May 16, 2013 2:09 AM

This article about an ad that was shown on Australian commerical TV that encouraged binge drinking for teenagers. It also included the mixed sport and binge drinking together, which many young people are involed in.

thomas chadrawy1's curator insight, May 20, 2013 5:40 AM

It is advertising like this and the portrayal of alcohol consumption in this manner that is most dangerous to the generations that are coming through. The advertisements that were mention in the article were said to portray young people drinking or gathering up large quantities of alcohol, the promotion of excessive drinking and alcohol-fuelled parties. Also the ads were shown in the afternoon with an audience of all ages.

If ads and the depiction of alcohol in this manner can be restricted to the audience that it directly affects, and can be shown in a responsible manner, without the added connotations and implications that are normally associated with alcohol, i believe it will be invaluable to society in order to halt the irresponsible and reckless drinking habits which have been developed in recent years.

Joel Roberts's curator insight, May 20, 2013 4:58 PM

This article "Liquorland shamed over reckless drinking ads (Aus) -video" talks about how people get ideas and follow ideas from advertisments so if we get the wrong idea from adds the teenagers may think this is the only way they can drink alchol and the only way to react to alchol.
