Huge increase in babies born addicted to drugs in US

Huge increase in babies born addicted to drugs in US | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it

One baby is born every half an hour addicted to some form of painkiller or opiate in the US, new figures have revealed. Doctors have blamed pharmaceutical companies for encouraging low-income mothers to take strong painkillers for increased levels of drug-abuse in cities and addiction in babies.

ReGenUC's insight:

While today's focus is on alcohol and FASD, it's important to remember the broader issues associated with the impacts of AOD use during pregnancy and ensuring that we provide the best possible supports to those at risk.

Maddie Kennedy's curator insight, September 10, 2015 3:10 PM

In this article it talks about how 1 baby ever half an hour is addicted to some sort of drug. Women that are pregnant are doing drugs while they are pregnant which is causing an increase in babies being born with an addiction to drugs. The mothers are doing the drugs right before they go into labor because they think it will help with the pain. Doctors are saying that this may be some what of the pharmaceutical companies fault. It affects me because later on when I want to start a family i don't want my baby to be addicted to pain killers the doctors prescribe me. I disagree that pharmacies shouldn't prescribe a women who is pregnant a painkiller that will have their baby addicted because no mother wants that. Sometimes it may be the pregnant women fault but not every time.

PBAC recommends Viekera Pak. Time for government to act (Aus)

The Federal Government needs to list new hepatitis C medicines on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) without further delay.         The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) has today recommended that yet another interferon-free drug combination should be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), while deferring consideration of simeprevir (when used with sofosbuvir) and also ribavirin.

ReGenUC's insight:

We missed this release when Hepatitis Victoria put it out last month. We certainly endorse improving the affordability/accessibility of HCV medications that offer a shorter, more tolerable, high cure rate treatment regime. There has been little recent change in the proportion of people who inject drugs who have HCV (around 50-70%). It's unacceptable that the rate of testing and treatment amongst this group is so low.  PBS listing of the new medications and adequate resourcing of AOD services to support treatment access would go a long way towards improving the situation.
