How one woman's drug addiction cost her everything (USA)

How one woman's drug addiction cost her everything (USA) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
TWO days before last Christmas, Beth Stephens was full of plans and promise.
ReGenUC's insight:

The headline gets it wrong. This is a story about the various factors that contribute to AOD dependence (some of these will be very familiar to #MeToo posters) and the long-term struggle that is recovery. Ms Stephens wasn't killed by her opioid dependence. She was killed by fentanyl and by drug policy. If she had injected in a supervised injecting facility, she would still be alive today. Because there was no-one to administer the naloxone that she was carrying with her, she died trying to stay alive.

First principle: keep people alive. It's understandable that crisis response funding has been directed to overdose prevention, but a longer-term response needs to include increased treatment and other support services to support recovery and sustainable behaviour change.

A new study explores factors increasing the risk for substance use problems among African-American/Black and Latino adults residing in a high-risk urban community, as well as patterns of resilience. ReGenUC's insight:

US study finds homelessness and incarceration to be key risk factors, education and social connectedness to be key resilience factors.  Lack of social connectedness was identified as a particular risk factor.

Many support Duterte's drugs war (Philippines)

Nearly nine out of 10 Filipinos support Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs, and almost three quarters believe extrajudicial killings are taking place in the bloody crackdown.
ReGenUC's insight:

There are polls and polls but it is undeniable that President Duterte's brutal drug policies do enjoy popular support in the Philippines. What is disturbing here is that the poll indicates that this support is not affected by knowledge that extrajudicial killings are occurring as a direct result of these policies. It's a stark indicator of the power of stigma that the lives of the nearly 10,000 people who have been killed since the start of the President's 'drug war' are not seen as worth protecting. See today's related post on the country's new 'Mega Rehab' prison and Govt plans to cut treatment funding by 75%, while expanding the budget for police operations by 4,000%: http://sco.lt/8xZELR
