Interlocks to make drink-drivers think twice (Vic)

They say you should not mix your drinks, but from 1 October there are even more reasons not to mix your drinking and driving. Minister for Roads, Terry Mulder said today that the expanded alcohol interlock program starting on 1 October will be tougher than ever on drink drivers and will make people think twice about having 'just one more'.

Study finds increase in HIV linked to 'ice' (Vic)

Melbourne men believe they contracted HIV through ice use with a ground-breaking study finding a "convincing significant association" between the drug and soaring rates of the infection.

Suggesting most infections occur through unprotected sex, not injecting.  Highlighting the increased risk taking often associated with methamphetamines use and the need for an ongoing focus on harm reduction.

And Victorian opposition leader Daniel Andrews has promised to make it  happen. But Campbell Newman, while "sympathetic" has not shifted his views on the  legalisation of medical cannabis.

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has changed the dynamic of our public discourse by supporting   the legalisation  of cannabis for medicinal use.  Mr Abbott’s strong support drags the cannabis debate — often the subject of stigma, fear and suspicion — forever out of the margins  and into  mainstream consideration.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher has called on the Community and Public Sector Union to progress enterprise bargaining negotiations for prison officers, before resolving a long-standing dispute on a needle exchange program inside Canberra's jail.

It's sad to see vital harm reduction inititiatives being used as a bargaining chip.  Every day this trial is delayed means more BBV transmission in the ACM and an even longer wait before similar measures could be introduced in other Australian prisons.

More than 30 years later, having lost her husband, her home and her business to drugs, she is still battling her addiction. But, like almost all female drug addicts in this former Soviet state, she has faced a desperate struggle not only with her drug problem, but with accessing help in the face of institutionalised and systematic discrimination because of her gender.
