Just like the Kings Cross injecting room, there's now a radical proposal for rooms where ice addicts can safely inhale. Liverpool has been identified as a possible location. And while the State Government is not on board, former Premier Bob Carr says it's an idea that must be discussed. Matthew Snelson reports.

It took time for Bob Carr to recognise the evidence supporting Sydney's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, but it's good to see he's getting in early to advocate for similar harm reduction measures.

Experts say that paediatric pain has long been underrecognized and undertreated, with serious long-term consequences.

For many of the people we see in our services, their alcohol or other drug dependence emerged from difficulties managing pain. This work highlights the potential risk of responses to childhood injuries contributing to heightened sensitivity to pain as in adulthood. The creators of a novel substance abuse treatment program have received an infusion of funding from a federal agency for an expanded study of their intervention, which targets marginalized populations who struggle with problem

Good to see an example of a treatment program that addresses some of the social determinants of health. It would be even better to see investment in relevant services that would provide people with practical support (e.g. housing, employment) to remove some of the systemic barriers to recovery.

California will vote on whether to legalise marijuana for recreational purposes on 8 November, after an initiative backing the measure secured the 402,000 valid signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. The California Secretary of State’s office announced on Tuesday that voters could now decide whether to approve the creation of the world’s largest legal marijuana market.

IN A last-ditch bid to woo Lindsay voters, Malcolm Turnbulls government has announced new funding of 600,000 towards a radical ice bed pilot program at Nepean Hospital — and an extra 5 million for Penriths Nepean River Precinct.

St Vincent's hospital has already done significant work adapting practice and physical environment for people presenting with methamphetamine intoxication. Hopefully, this new initiative will result in more than just a 'holding cell' and reliance on benzos to manage patients.

‘Real improvements’ in drinking culture among Australians in their 20s, lowest level since the 1960s

AUSTRALIANS in their 20s are drinking almost half as much as young people their age were consuming a decade ago despite alcohol never being more readily available, a new study shows.

A while ago, somebody asked me a strange question and, at first I was a little bit offended.

Johann Hari reflects on LGBTI people's experience of stigmatisation, trauma and social exclusion as providing relevant insights into key drug policy issues. One thing he doesn't refer to is the higher rates of mental illness (which is another key contributor to problematic AOD use) within LGBTI communities.
