Alcohol is destroying us: Four Australians share their stories | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
LIKES a drink, or drinks too much? Whether it’s an indifferent attitude to the excess consumption of alcohol, or our ignorance when it comes to the effect it has on our bodies, Australia’s most socially accepted drug is indeed destroying lives.

Citing data from the recent VicHealth, Turning Point, Eastern Health & FARE Australia report: http://www.vichealth.vic.gov.au/Publications/Alcohol-Misuse/Alcohols-burden-of-disease-in-Australia.aspx

Stark 'anti-drugs campaign needed' (N.Ireland)

Stark 'anti-drugs campaign needed' (N.Ireland) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it

Young people have died "horrific deaths" from taking multiple drugs, a senior member of the Forensic Science service in Northern Ireland has said.  Twenty people have died in the last year from drugs known as "speckled cherries".

ReGenUC's insight:

The usual call for a robust response when 'something must be done'.  Unfortunately, all the evidence tells us that scare campaigns don't work.  They do help people who probably wouldn't have used anyway confirm their decision, but are ineffective for those at the greatest risk of harm.  Harm Reduction is the key.

Victorian regions hit by drug crime increase amid ice ‘epidemic’

Victorian regions hit by drug crime increase amid ice ‘epidemic’ | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
DRUG crime is soaring at alarming levels across regional Victoria due to a saturation of the drug ice in country towns, it is claimed.
ReGenUC's insight:

Thanks to the Herald Sun for using the quotation marks.

We know rural towns are really struggling with this issue, but as the most recent national data shows, while use of Ice is increasing as a proportion of use of all amphetamine type substances, it is not the 'pandemic' described by the ACC earlier this year.

The findings of the 2013 National Household Drug Survey are available here: http://www.aihw.gov.au/alcohol-and-other-drugs/ndshs/. You can read the full report, or see the key findings about stimulants at the bottom of the page.

ADDICTION is blighting the lives of many classical musicians as they grapple with performance anxiety and anti-social hours, a cellist has said.
ReGenUC's insight:

So, not just rock and roll then.  It's always good to see coverage that challenges common stereotypes about the 'type of person' who becomes drug dependent.

It's not just the stereotypical rock-stars, Hollywood actors, or porn celebrities that are affected by pressures to perform on camera or on stage. Addiction touches the lives of people across culture, race, age, gender, occupation, and social class.

An extended personal account of the direct impacts of political events on drug treatment and people's wellbeing.  For all the criticisms that can be made about Australian drug policy and treatment systems, events like the one's Igor describes are a reminder of how much worse things are for people who use AOD (and their families) in other parts of the world.
