There Is No Ice Epidemic: A Statistical Analysis (Aus) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
The numbers used to prove Australia is in an ice epidemic don't prove that at all.
ReGenUC's insight:

Nice piece by Girard Dorney. It's a tough task to challenge the hysteria around methamphetamines but acknowledge the lived experience of affected communities. See today's earlier post for an example: http://sco.lt/4gu8kj

Ice stats don’t tell real story (Vic) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
THE growing rate of ice use seen in Wangaratta is not matching up with national statistics.
ReGenUC's insight:

Citing YoDAA's Dom Ennis.  This article highlights the potential for disconnection between research data and lived experience in regional communities. Public fora like this need to bridge this divide and provide community members with an understanding of key issues and that what they can do to respond.

Another variation on a theme that's been explored previously. As with previous examples, we'd wonder just how many people are going to use this, other than as a game.  If you look at the examples given, it's pretty underwhelming: basically adding some rouge and wrinkles. Is it going to change behaviour?  Unlikely.

Meth use in Dubbo and the wider western region is increasing dramatically because of cheaper and more pure product being available but is still isn’t as damaging as alcohol abuse, according to the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSW LHD).
ReGenUC's insight:

A 'good' example of the current media obsession with methamphetmaines. The opening sentence acknowledges that alcohol does more damage within the region, but the rest of the article is all about Ice.

Time to tackle alcohol abuse (Aus)

Time to tackle alcohol abuse (Aus) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Alcohol misuse is one of Australia's major health issues. Alcohol-related harm pervades society. It is not just a problem of George Street in Sydney or Lygon Street in Melbourne or Fortitude Valley in Brisbane. The devastating consequences of alcohol misuse extend from our cities and into rural and remote areas and the number of alcohol-related assaults numbers more than tops 70,000 per annum a year.
