Proportion of UK drug users using dark net to buy drugs 'doubles in three years'

Proportion of UK drug users using dark net to buy drugs 'doubles in three years' | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
There has been a huge rise in the number of UK drug users using the dark internet to buy illegal substances, a new survey has revealed. The Global Drug Survey, of which The Independent is a partner, found more users are buying their drugs on the dark net in the UK than almost anywhere else in the world. The mass of hidden web pages allows users to connect with online drug dealers while hiding their computer IP addresses to avoid being traced.

For these Philly librarians, drug tourists and overdose drills are part of the job

For these Philly librarians, drug tourists and overdose drills are part of the job | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it

Since the opioid crisis began surging throughout the country last summer, the McPherson library staff has noticed new settlers on their lawn: "drug tourists."

ReGenUC's insight:

A fascinating piece that highlights both the caring and pragmatic response by McPherson library staff and the extent to which overdose has become normalised in parts of the US. What would be even better would be if people had a Medically Supervised Injecting Centre to use and be monitored by medical professionals, not having the responsibility displaced to librarians.

The intelligent approach is expanding options for families (Qld)

The intelligent approach is expanding options for families (Qld) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it

QNADA felt the need to respond to an article in the Gold Coast Bulletin that suggested that "dumb" people with uncontrollable ice problems breeding more kids is the cause of a spike in defendants in the local Children's Court."  We argue for the expansion of treatment options for families.

ReGenUC's insight:

Nice response by QNADA (the peak body for the AOD sector in Qld) to the latest example of welfare recipient bashing that shows no understanding of the core issues. It's a particular concern that there are now two faculty members at Bond University that are making the argument that poor people don't have the same reproductive rights as the rest of the population. With this sort of sustained media coverage, it's only a matter of time before we start seeing arguments for forced sterilisations, as regularly proposed by organisations like Project Prevention (http://www.projectprevention.org/). With the Turnbull Govt already racheting up the inflammatory rhetoric (to justify punitive policy measures) on people who receive Centrelink payments, this sort of uninformed stereotyping (and gross simplification of the complex issues in play) is the last thing we need.

Cuts to addiction services in England are 'a false economy' warns expert

Cuts to addiction services in England are a false economy and are instead increasing pressure elsewhere in the NHS, warns an expert in The BMJ today.

Professor Colin Drummond, Chair of the Addictions Faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists states what is obvious to anyone in the sector: removing specialist AOD services simply puts additional strain on generalist services like GPs and hospitals. 'Someone could die': Does our shearing industry have an ice problem? (Aus) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
The shearers shake their heads and won't talk about drugs. "We have to work with each other," they say.
ReGenUC's insight:

We know that the workplace pressures of many agricultural, mining and transport jobs in rural and regional areas contribute to problematic use of stimulants, as people seek chemical assistance to stay awake/alert in order to work long hours at physically demanding tasks. We also know that rural and regional communities are experiencing particular harms associated with methamphetamine use. There are many issues to be addressed here. Animal welfare is one of them. Another is providing communities with access to appropriate (and sufficiently resourced) treatment and support services as part of a holistic response to the complex issues in play.
