Moderate lifetime marijuana smoking associated with airway irritation but not lung function (USA)

A research study based on analysis of publicly available data has found that recent marijuana use was associated with symptoms of airway inflammation, but that moderate lifetime use was not associated with clinically significant changes in measures of lung function. The study is the largest cross-sectional analysis of the relationship between marijuana use and measures of lung health to date.

Hefty damages awarded for 'drunk at work' sacking (Aus)

An insurance broker that sacked a state manager accused of being drunk at a work training conference has been ordered to pay him almost $300,000 after a court found his behaviour did not amount to gross misconduct, particularly in light of the company’s practices in relation to alcohol.

UNODC Trains Journalists On New Dimension to Drug, Crime Reporting, Others (Nigeria)

WITH reporting on drugs and crime mostly taking the dimension of the negative impact of drug effect on its users, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), last week held a 2-day Media Roundtable for selected health reporters across the nation where they were trained and urged to look for a more compassionate way of reporting the menace that would be more beneficial to the society.

'He finally urged reporters to avoid sensationalism, present the solution and not the problem stating that it will pave the way for informed discussion.' Some good advice for Aus media producers too!

Half the picture – beyond drug overdose as a cause of death in opioid using people (UK)

The big rise in heroin and other opioid drug poisonings that the ONS reported last year has been real focus of concern amongst service providers, policy makers and anyone who cares about the lives of vulnerable people. But new research from the University of Manchester suggests that while overdoses in opioid users remains the largest cause of death (43%) there are other causes which providers, commissioners and policy makers need to be conscious of particularly amongst older drug users.

This relates to how culture is not inherited but learned whether it is a negative or positive trait. Culture is fast spreading and difficult to stop once it gains momentum. Future generations would not be affected if everybody cut out alcohol for good. However, alcoholism IS passed down genetically. So, if the growing culture of alcohol at any time continues, we can expect an increase in alcoholics as well as other alcohol related problems.
