ReGenUC's insight:

We know that grandparents are often left with responsibilities for young grandchildren, when the children's parents are unable to maintain custody due to AOD dependence (and/or other issues). It's one of a range of impacts of families affected by AOD use that can have a significant impact on family members' wellbeing. We've supported grandparents through our Playgroup programs. It's great to see more support being offered to carers.

From dealing $40,000 a day of meth to lobbying the government for solutions to the 'most evil drug to ever hit the face of the planet', Peter Lyndon-James is not your typical Christian chaplain.

As with other advocates for quarantining of welfare payments, Mr Lyndon-James ignores the evidence that such measures are not effective in preventing use and contribute to increased harm within communities as people find other ways to source or pay for drugs. Welfare hikes won't fix poverty: minister (Aus) | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Boosting welfare payments and rolling out more services isn't the answer to fighting poverty, the federal government has warned, as it urges Australians to take a different tack in fixing the problem.
ReGenUC's insight:

Wow, Human Services Minister Alan Tudge (whose ministerial salary is over $300k) says poor and disadvantaged people don't need more money, but should address their 'general dysfunction'. He then goes on to try to justify the Govt's odious welfare drug testing measures. Here's what we had to say about them, when they were announced: http://sco.lt/5LlsrR. Ontario study raises red flags over methadone distribution

Ontario study raises red flags over methadone distribution | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Researchers express concern over lack of counselling and other physician support at clinics offering opioid-addiction treatment
ReGenUC's insight:

The study highlights problems with the number of doctors prescribing methadone (a very familiar problem for those with any knowledge of the Victorian AOD sector) and the flawed service model in which people are provided pharmacotherapies, but no other support. See our position statement and supporting evidence on Opioid Replacement Therapy for our take on the importance of providing people with a range of supports to support sustainable, long term recovery from opioid dependence: http://www.regen.org.au/news-advocacy/advocacy-in-action.
