New supervised injection sites are giving addicts better spaces to use, but getting treatment is still tough. CBC News followed one 24-year-old heroin user in Ottawa trying to get help.
ReGenUC's insight:

First principle: keep people alive. It's understandable that crisis response funding has been directed to overdose prevention, but a longer-term response needs to include increased treatment and other support services to support recovery and sustainable behaviour change.

Tourist town of Exmouth promotes plan to be Australia's first meth-free zone | Alcohol & other drug issues in the media | Scoop.it
Known for its natural beauty, the town of Exmouth tries out a novel way to stay on the map.
ReGenUC's insight:

It's a worthy aspiration, but one that is unlikely to be achieved. If methamphetamine can't be kept out of theoretically closed systems like prisons, there is little chance it can be done in a tourist region. There are ways to address drug related harm within a community. This probably isn't it.

Many support Duterte's drugs war (Philippines)

Nearly nine out of 10 Filipinos support Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs, and almost three quarters believe extrajudicial killings are taking place in the bloody crackdown.
ReGenUC's insight:

There are polls and polls but it is undeniable that President Duterte's brutal drug policies do enjoy popular support in the Philippines. What is disturbing here is that the poll indicates that this support is not affected by knowledge that extrajudicial killings are occurring as a direct result of these policies. It's a stark indicator of the power of stigma that the lives of the nearly 10,000 people who have been killed since the start of the President's 'drug war' are not seen as worth protecting. See today's related post on the country's new 'Mega Rehab' prison and Govt plans to cut treatment funding by 75%, while expanding the budget for police operations by 4,000%: http://sco.lt/8xZELR
