Alberta Tories Using Secret Trust Fund

Alberta Tories Using Secret Trust Fund | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
EDMONTON - Alberta's opposition parties want the Progressive Conservatives to disclose how much money they have in a secret trust fund the party has been dipping into for decades. The governing Tories passed a law in 1977 making such trust funds illegal, but excluded their own party from the legislation in a grandfathering clause. The Wildrose party called Wednesday on the Tories to shut down the fund and come clean."Every other political party in Alberta must reveal its assets. It's the law," Wildrose member Jeff Wilson said.

Study Confirms Tar Sands Mining Destroying Local Ecosystems By Andrea Germanos

Study Confirms Tar Sands Mining Destroying Local Ecosystems By Andrea Germanos | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
Annette Lengyel's insight:

//"Contributing to the problem is that what little regulation that does exist, both at the federal and provincial level, she said, doesn't get enforced, as it's a case of the fox guarding the hen house because much of the regulation is industry-led. Looking at last year, "of the more than 4000 infractions [by the tar sands industry] that were reported, less than 1 percent were penalized," she noted."//

Alberta pays U.S. lobbyists $2M in five years | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
As Canada presses the Obama administration to approve the Keystone XL project, the Alberta government has spent more than $2 million on U.S. lobbyists since 2008 on key issues such as the oil pipeline — although the flow of provincial money has dried up this year. According to government records, the province has paid $2,126,168 to firms registered as lobbyists with the United States government since Calgary-based TransCanada made its application five years ago for approval of the Keystone pipeline.

Report on Alberta doctors and oilpatch raises concerns among opposition critics

Report on Alberta doctors and oilpatch raises concerns among opposition critics | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
...
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Doctors and labs in collusion with industry to cover up health problems from bitumen production?  Are they getting paid to do that one wonders.

//"On Tuesday, a hearing is set to begin in Peace River, Alta., about the source and effects of odours that landowners blame on the local oilpatch, particularly the operations of Baytex Energy.

Baytex uses an unusual method of heating bitumen in above-ground tanks to extract the oil. Residents say the fumes from those heated tanks are causing powerful gassy smells and leading to symptoms that include severe headaches, dizziness, sinus congestion, muscle spasms, popping ears, memory loss, numbness, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, eye twitching and fatigue.

Among the reports commissioned for the hearing by the Alberta Energy Regulator is one from Margaret Sears, a doctor in chemical engineering, who has testified on environmental contamination for many bodies including the Royal Society of Canada.

Sears wrote that even though most health professionals believe petrochemical emissions affect health, Peace River doctors seemed unwilling to consider if the conditions their patients complained of were caused by long-term exposure to petrochemicals.//"

Lakritz: Double standard takes wing for Redford and Klein

Lakritz: Double standard takes wing for Redford and Klein | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
Why the double standard? A lot of people clamoured for Premier Alison Redford to repay the $45,000 she spent to fly to Nelson Mandela’s funeral in December, and Wednesday she agreed to do it. Yet, when former premier Ralph Klein wasted more than $250,000 on the misuse of government planes in 2003 and 2004, nobody demanded he repay a penny of it.
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Double standard indeed.  Klein got away with many unethical (and illegal) shenanigans both as premier and as mayor.  He was surrounded and protected by an army of sycophants who kept him from accountability and profited from his popularity.  Redford has a few things working against her--probably the biggest disadvantage is she's not a person "of the people" but elitist and unapproachable.  She's just not likeable.  But that's not a good reason to judge and hold her to a set of standards different from her predecessors.  But it's also the times--the public is just sick to death of being cheated by this government--impossibly increasing executive salaries for "public servants", while ridiculous cutbacks for a broken healthcare system, low minimum wages, and a heavily subsidized and privileged oil industry etc etc.

TransAlta Corp. accused of manipulating electricity market

TransAlta Corp. accused of manipulating electricity market | Alberta Unbound | Scoop.it
EDMONTON — Alberta’s electricity market watchdog has accused TransAlta Corp. of manipulating the market by shutting down its power plants at peak times to drive up prices. The Market Surveillance Administrator (MSA) filed the accusations before the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) on Monday, claiming TransAlta “undermined the integrity of the Alberta wholesale electric energy market by engaging in anti-competitive conduct.”
Annette Lengyel's insight:

Here we go again with the Enron tactics of TransAlta--and yet no prosecutions.  This isn't the first time TransAlta has done this--perhaps because all they get is a slap on the wrist, and a nod and a wink from the conservatives whose campaigns they fund.  Last time around, one day TransAlta was fined a measly 50K for gouging ratepayers, and the next day the CEO is schmoozing with Redford, Nenshi, etal. at a champagne celebration of homelessness.  Will the watchdog and the weak-kneed "regulatory body" bring any justice here?  I demand a refund for all these years of being gouged!
