"The study by IBI Group Inc. figures the province will have to pay $4o million to acquire around 700 hectares, but the government’s own documents show it will need over 1,400 hectares that a land valuation expert consulted by the Herald conservatively estimates would cost taxpayers at least $139 million."

 

Based on a recent survey of vulnerable properties in Calgary, the study estimates average annual direct and indirect damages from floods on the Elbow River of $21.7 million, of which $16.7 million could be prevented by the proposed Springbank project.

Most Albertans, including a majority of Conservative voters, are opposed to government cuts to universities and colleges, despite fiscal problems caused by low oil prices, says a new poll by Public Interest Alberta. Bill Moore-Kilgannon, the group’s executive director, released the poll Friday as part of a campaign calling for more investment in post-secondary education (PSE) even in the downturn.

Devore believes more needs to be done to help first responders, including a review of the current de-briefing procedures to see whether they are actually effective. According to Devore, the current procedures were developed in the 1980s and haven't been proven scientifically to help. Another thing that needs to change is the culture among the first responders community.

Not one of the Progressive Conservative MLAs on the committee, including former Wildrose MLAs Gary Bikman and Jeff Wilson, had the fortitude to defend the decision they made last week. Only NDP MLA David Eggen and Liberal MLA Laurie Blakeman voted against the funding cut.
