Former Police Chief assigned new officers to NE Calgary in final hour on the job

Former Police Chief assigned new officers to NE Calgary in final hour on the job | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
New documents obtained exclusively by CTV News show that former Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson was doing a lot more than just saying goodbye on his final day in office.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

The things people do ...

"Edmonton lawyer Tom Engel is calling on the new Alberta Solicitor General, Kathleen Ganley, to initiate an investigation into the issue by a third-party police force."

“To me, it’s a very clear conflict of interest, and it’s very surprising to say the least,” said Engel, Chair of the Alberta Criminal Trial Lawyers Association Policing Committee.

Engel said Hanson’s political ambitions were “an open secret,” and CPS Executive members should have stepped in.

“If they knew he was about to [run for political office] they had a duty to stop him,” he said.

More than 100 researchers sign statement
Jody MacPherson's insight:

The signers, who include a Nobel laureate, 12 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, and 22 members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, offer 10 arguments for a moratorium, “each grounded in science.” For example, they write, a 2014 report by the government of Alberta—where large oil sands deposits are located—suggests that less than 0.2% of the area affected by oil sands mining has been reclaimed, despite the industry’s assurances. They also note that studies suggest Canada can’t meet its existing commitments to curb carbon emissions if mining expands.

Jody MacPherson's insight:

Alberta Teachers Association President Mark Ramsankar is encouraging school boards to "just spend some time and wait for the new numbers" in order to avoid making unnecessary reductions to staff. He said the ATA is aware of some memos circulating "showing support staff being used as part of a target to balance budgets."

"I don't believe making plans or building a budget on numbers that are old because they're the only ones available," Ramsankar said, adding teachers need employment certainty soon so they before the school year begins in September.

Long-term strategy, preparation behind ‘shocking’ NDP win

Long-term strategy, preparation behind ‘shocking’ NDP win | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
The orange tsunami that hit Alberta on Tuesday night was not a freak storm. When Rachel Notley’s NDP won a commanding 53-seat majority, pundits said the victory was “stunning,” “shocking,” even “a lesson from the increasingly unpredictable voter.”
Jody MacPherson's insight:

...Third, have the leader say: “My name is Rachel Notley, and I’m running to be your premier.” That way, you’re not asking Albertans to become New Democrats, you’re asking them to ask themselves: Who do I like best as my premier?

So true. So many political parties run their election campaigns like they're on a party membership drive. They are two different things.

Not only do you have to say what you stand for, but show that you know how to attract a wide range of people, organize and win. That's how you earn people's trust and their vote.

Liberals, take note.
