Jody MacPherson's insight:

So true. "Our systems of party politics keep great people from doing great things."

Parties do not serve women or minorities. They don't serve as a source of innovation or new ideas. They don't serve democracy or the public. They serve themselves only...logos, brands, colours and graphics become everything.

Calgary frustrated by slow progress on regional land-use plan

Calgary frustrated by slow progress on regional land-use plan | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
The Calgary regional coalition remains marred by squabbling and holdouts, five years after Calgary and its neighbours were supposed to ratify a plan to swap concentrated growth in rural areas for access to city water and sewer services.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Calgary holds far more water licence capacity than it needs, a precious commodity because the province has barred new drawing rights in the fragile Bow River watershed. For Rocky View to pursue development plans in West Balzac, it likely needs Calgary’s assistance, and the city has long used regional partnership as a lever to access that help.

“We do have landowners who desperately want servicing,” Reeve Margaret Bahcheli said. “Yes, there is very real pressure: top-down from Calgary, and from some of the residents up.”

But many county residents agree with politicians it’s risky to join a partnership in which the largest player — Calgary — can veto any major board decisions.

The Tyee – Alberta Moves to Strike Down Anti-Fracker Ernst's Lawsuit

The Tyee – Alberta Moves to Strike Down Anti-Fracker Ernst's Lawsuit | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Landmark case could spark a flood of litigation against the province, lawyers argue.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"Justice Wittman had trouble following the coherence of the government argument to strike the claim in the crowded Drumheller courtroom.

He noted that Boyle's line of reasoning, which argued that the Crown owed no private duty of care to landowners, suggested that Alberta Environment would have to be negligent all the time before it could ever be found liable."

Bill 9 would be 'crippling' for Alberta labour, says Nenshi

Bill 9 would be 'crippling' for Alberta labour, says Nenshi | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
The Mayor of Calgary is urging the premier to put a stop to a bill that amends the public sector's pension plans until after a thorough consultation with municipalities and unions.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"The reform will create a dangerous incentive for our workforce to either take early retirement before 2016 or enter into the private sector," he said. "It will complicate our labour relations, increase our costs as a city, create risk and uncertainty and will not help our retirees."

Despite the perceived problems with the bill, Nenshi said he and the council are not saying no to any pension reform but rather want to see the government re-evaluate how it goes about changing the plans.

Government should not fund anti-gay school: school that teaches gays will be punished in “lake of fire” receives $ 7 million | Green Party of Alberta
