Jody MacPherson's insight:

So true. "Our systems of party politics keep great people from doing great things."

Parties do not serve women or minorities. They don't serve as a source of innovation or new ideas. They don't serve democracy or the public. They serve themselves only...logos, brands, colours and graphics become everything.

Calgary frustrated by slow progress on regional land-use plan

Calgary frustrated by slow progress on regional land-use plan | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
The Calgary regional coalition remains marred by squabbling and holdouts, five years after Calgary and its neighbours were supposed to ratify a plan to swap concentrated growth in rural areas for access to city water and sewer services.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Calgary holds far more water licence capacity than it needs, a precious commodity because the province has barred new drawing rights in the fragile Bow River watershed. For Rocky View to pursue development plans in West Balzac, it likely needs Calgary’s assistance, and the city has long used regional partnership as a lever to access that help.

“We do have landowners who desperately want servicing,” Reeve Margaret Bahcheli said. “Yes, there is very real pressure: top-down from Calgary, and from some of the residents up.”

But many county residents agree with politicians it’s risky to join a partnership in which the largest player — Calgary — can veto any major board decisions.
