Are the days of Alberta’s flat tax numbered? | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it

Alberta introduces bill to aid gay youth in schools, reduce suicide

Alberta introduces bill to aid gay youth in schools, reduce suicide | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Liberal Laurie Blakeman introduced Bill 202, the Safe and Inclusive School Act, mandating schools to allow students, if they wish, to create gay-straight alliances to combat bullying
Jody MacPherson's insight:

A vote against this bill puts partisan interests ahead of the best interests of children. We need to undo the damage of Bill 44, a terrible piece of legislation that created this problem in the first place.

If the PC's do not vote in favour of the bill, I think it will be clear they are the same or worse than the Wildrose Party.

It's time to do right by the children of Alberta and stop creating an environment of intolerance in our publicly-funded schools.

Former health executive gets $900,000 payout

Former health executive gets $900,000 payout | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Alberta Health Services has paid former health executive Allaudin Merali $900,000 after acknowledging he was fired without cause two years ago.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"Officials did not say how much of the $900,000 went to pay severance obligations and how much went to pay damages related to the lawsuit. They also refused to say how much taxpayer money went to pay legal fees for AHS, Alberta Health and former Health minister Fred Horne, all of whom filed separate statements of defence. None of the lawyers engaged in the lawsuit returned called Friday."

Stollery surgeries cancelled by lack of beds, doctors claim | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Hundreds of surgeries at the Stollery Children’s Hospital are being cancelled because of a lack of beds for children, according a letter that cites concerns from 20 pediatric surgeons that was sent to Alberta Health Services earlier this fall.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Alberta Health Services admits it is having serious difficulty dealing with growing demands on pediatric medicine across the province.

Dr. David Mador, the AHS medical director for northern Alberta, said the province is working on freeing up beds for sick children.

Alberta education minister Gord Dirks approved modulars in campaign riding ahead of others where need is greater

Alberta education minister Gord Dirks approved modulars in campaign riding ahead of others where need is greater | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Alberta's education minister is coming under fire for his prompt approval of two modular classrooms in the very riding where he's seeking an MLA seat, seemingly even ignoring a ranked priority list the province requires Calgary's public school board to…
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"...campaign manager Alan Hallman. Hallman agreed that only the William Reid modulars had been approved, but said that decision came as a result of opposition parties “cranking up a whole bunch of parents during a byelection to politically activate them.”

“The minister, he’s going to look after Calgary-Elbow, (and) made a stand,” Hallman said. “He was worried about these parents and what the opposition was making this into and he made a decision.”

Seems like same old, same old Tory behaviour to me.

Jody MacPherson's insight:

Watch Kent Hehr ask the Minister of Education Gordon Dirks why he approved modulars for a school in Calgary Elbow where he was running to be elected in the recent by-election, bypassing a long list of other schools in other locations the CBE had given a higher priority.

Wouldn't Dirks be in a conflict of interest because he would stand to gain personally from his decision as Minister during an election campaign? How is this allowed?

Flood diversion project no longer based on economic worth, documents show

Flood diversion project no longer based on economic worth, documents show | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
The province no longer wants projections of economic worth included in the environmental impact assessment report for a proposed $200-million river diversion project to protect Calgary from flooding. A document obtained by the Herald shows government bureaucrats proposed in July that the report on the Springbank offstream reservoir would need a cost-benefit ratio that would assist the province’s natural resources regulator in deciding whether to approve construction.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

More Calgary-Elbow vote buying?

"Provincial officials say that updated appraisal is not expected until at least December, but Premier Jim Prentice decided to give the go ahead anyway last month — three days before calling a byelection in a riding where many city homeowners affected by the 2013 floods reside.

Prentice told reporters at the time that the Springbank reservoir was the “most cost-effective solution” to protecting Calgary against future flooding.

But preliminary cost-benefit calculations in AMEC’S report show it would actually be $23-million cheaper for the government to shell out for all damages every time the Elbow River overflows its banks during the next century than it would be to build and maintain the reservoir project over the same period."

Jody MacPherson's insight:

The good news he shared with parents in an open letter on his campaign website came before he told Calgary Board of Education anything about the 10 other schools on its priority list for portables — including six ranked higher, all outside of ridings where Tories are running in byelections.

“Given the school’s burgeoning enrolment, two modular classrooms have been approved for William Reid School and should be in place for the 2015-16 school year,” states the letter, posted this week with both candidate and minister title beneath Dirks’ signature.
