Simons: Alison Redford keeps her promise to the not-for-profit sector in a most unwelcome way

Simons: Alison Redford keeps her promise to the not-for-profit sector in a most unwelcome way | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
In May 2012, Alison Redford, fresh from electoral victory, was invited to address the Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations, the lobby group that represents metro area not-for-profits and charities.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Simons: These reforms will sever long-standing relationships of trust that clients have formed with their caregivers. Agencies will have to lay off dedicated, experienced staff, and our community will lose years of expertise. The personal human cost, for caregivers and clients, will be high. And the not-for-profit sector, which evolved and expanded to fill the gap in services left by government years ago, will be rewarded for its hard work and commitment with a slap in the face.

Battochio: Alberta can’t afford cuts to distance learning

Battochio: Alberta can’t afford cuts to distance learning | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
On March 7, the government of Alberta tabled a budget that included funding cuts to the distance learning reimbursements for school districts, predominantly used to enrol students at Alberta Distance Learning Centre.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

"Alberta Education has promoted Inspiring Education, a government-led vision that includes the guiding principle of inclusive and equitable access. Inspiring Education states that “every learner should have fair and reasonable access to educational opportunities regardless of ability, economic circumstance, location or cultural background.”

Distributed learning has been a godsend to students in Alberta for the past 90 years. Now, when the technology is available to provide every student with a high-quality education, the recent funding cuts have effectively limited the ability of schools to afford learning opportunities for some of our most vulnerable students."

Simons: AHS mass firing sends clear message: Do what we say. Or else. | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
Here’s the way things usually work in Alberta. 1) The province creates “arm’s-lengths” boards to run various public institutions, everything from universities to health authorities.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Simons:

The board defied the wishes of the minister. Horne had to fire them — if only to send a message to other provincially funded boards, like university boards of governors, the Alberta Investment Management Corporation, or even elected school boards, that defiance will not be tolerated. Wednesday’s putsch doesn’t just throw the management of our provincial health care system back into disarray, yet again, it sends a chill through the ranks all of those who populate Alberta’s government-appointed boards.

Jody MacPherson's insight:

Four Councillors from Rocky View County wrote a letter to Municipal Affairs Minister, Doug Griffiths, requesting his intervention.  The basis of their request was "fiscal mismanagement"

Section 282(1) of the Municipal Government Act states:

The Minister may appoint one or more auditors to audit the books and accounts of a municipality if the Minister considers the audit to be needed or

(a)  on the request of the council,

(b) on the request of not fewer than 1/3 of the Councillors on the council, or

(c)  on receiving a sufficient petition from the electors of the municipality rquesting the appointment of an auditor

They were turned down!

Ex-Capital Health VP expensed thousands for dinners, booze, charity balls

Ex-Capital Health VP expensed thousands for dinners, booze, charity balls | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
A high-ranking health executive who billed taxpayers $7,000 for a trip to the Mayo Clinic also expensed more than $10,000 for lavish dinners, booze and charity balls in support of Catholic organizations.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

Apparently, the PC Party leader takes no responsibility for the actions of any of its previous elected government members...and can't understand why anyone would even suggest they would. It is the ultimate in "blank slate" politics.

"Opposition parties and journalists have filed freedom-of-information requests for expense records for health executives going back more than five years. Some have been released, others are tied up in the legal process.

Redford said she has “absolutely no doubt” the opposition will continue dragging skeletons out of fiscal closet, but reiterated that Alberta Health Services will handle the release of the records.

“To sort of tar and feather this government with that system is ridiculous, because we created a different system, we created a different set of rules with respect to expense guidelines, we’ve changed the administration and the governance of AHS,” Redford said. “To somehow suggest that this government would defend those actions is ridiculous.”
