Corporations owe Alberta $1.1B in unpaid taxes

Corporations owe Alberta $1.1B in unpaid taxes | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
One of only two provinces that do not contract with Canada Revenue Agency to collect corporate taxes, Alberta spent $34 million last year to collect $5.6 billion in corporate taxes.

While running its own administration meant Alberta got to keep about $230 million in interest and penalties it collected last year, it also means the province has to assume the risk if taxes assessed go unpaid and ultimately have to be written off.

Former Police Chief assigned new officers to NE Calgary in final hour on the job | Politics in Alberta | Scoop.it
New documents obtained exclusively by CTV News show that former Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson was doing a lot more than just saying goodbye on his final day in office.
Jody MacPherson's insight:

The things people do ...

"Edmonton lawyer Tom Engel is calling on the new Alberta Solicitor General, Kathleen Ganley, to initiate an investigation into the issue by a third-party police force."

“To me, it’s a very clear conflict of interest, and it’s very surprising to say the least,” said Engel, Chair of the Alberta Criminal Trial Lawyers Association Policing Committee.

Engel said Hanson’s political ambitions were “an open secret,” and CPS Executive members should have stepped in.

“If they knew he was about to [run for political office] they had a duty to stop him,” he said.

Schools will be introducing mandatory education to teach students about residential schools and indigenous culture, using curriculum developed with aboriginals, Ganley said.

“Because what we don’t want is the story of what we think happened because that’s not useful,” Ganley said. “The point is to have non-aboriginal people have a better understanding of aboriginal people.”
