The Aquaculturists: FAO Globefish Commodity Update: Fishmeal and fish oil

The Aquaculturists: FAO Globefish Commodity Update: Fishmeal and fish oil | Alaska Natives | Scoop.it

The FAO has released its annual Globefish Commodity Update on fishmeal and fish oil. The report contains commodity information on prices, imports, exports and production by commodity. The information is taken from the network of Globefish correspondents and the Globefish European Price Report, INFOFISH Trade News, FAO FISHDAB, EUROSTAT and others. Fishmeal prices remained strong in the first part of 2013 as supply fell in the 2012. Total production fell by 35 percent between 2011 and 2012. The two main Latin American exporters, Peru and Chile, continued their dominance with Peru accounting for 82 percent of South American production. Elsewhere, Icelandic production rose significantly thanks to a rise in herring and mackerel catches.
The average price of fish oil in the last quarter was US$2138. This was 43 percent higher than the average price in the last quarter of 2011. The growing demand for fish oil for both aquaculture and human consumption and a weak supply in 2012 mean that these high prices look set to continue into 2013.  For single issues please email globefish-pub@fao.org. Or visit the Globefish website.
Other issues, released throughout the year, include bivalves, salmon, shrimp and tuna.

Terrance H BoothSr's insight:

Most Native companies work for others and yet if they work for themselves they tap into direct marketing, Native Labeling,  sales, value-adding and taking advantage of diversification programs of major stores to place our Native products on the store shelves and freezer displays.  Major Grocery Stores have "Ethnic Foods Section" but never do you see Native labels.

Metlakatla is home to the only native reserve in the state of Alaska. It is located on Annette Island in the most Southern part of S.E. Alaska. Members of the Tsimshian tribe originally traveled over by canoe from their home in British Columbia in 1887. Seeking religious freedom, they were following William Duncan, a missionary with the Church of England. Today the community of Metlakatla is a unique and welcoming place to witness the rich Tsimshian cultural heritage.

Terrance H BoothSr's insight:

Southeast Alaska region tourism is a $530 Million Dollar industry.  Working tohgether as tribes of Alaska we can benefit by simply being ourselves as Haida, Tlingit and  Tsimshian.  Ketchikan receives 39,000 visitors from May to end of September joining forces we can econonmically benefit for many of the visitors come for a cullture experience and I have yet to see an exclusive Alaska Cuisine Restaurant.  Top it off 35% of Alaska's visitors come to Southeast Alaska.
