President Hery Rajaonarimampianina, who took office in January, has pledged to woo foreign investors and tourists back to Madagascar, which is famed for its exotic wildlife and also boasts nickel, cobalt, coal, iron ore and uranium deposits. By naming Razafindravonona as finance minister, the 31 member cabinet will work towards ending Madagascar's political crisis and provide economic stability.

At  Analamazaotra Forest Station, an association of tour guides and community members have embarked on an ambitious reforestation project to educate local people about the value of preserving the forest as well as generating an income for 400 nearby households. An example of restoring the forest is by taking out invasive species of tress and planting native species in their place.

Earlier this year, Madagascar's President, Rajaonarimampianina, elected Prime Minister Roger Kolo and a new slate of ministers. This election was a big step in the country's slow movement towards democracy and economic stability. The US has continued to be a big supporter of this movement, providing over $55 million in FY 2013 for food security and health programs.

Kolo Christophe Laurent Roger was appointed to be the prime minister of Madagascar by the president on 4/11/14 in an ongoing attempt to end political turmoil. Kolo will be responsible for running small government affairs and enforcing the president's decisions.

They discussed how the United Nations will support "national dialogue, job creation, and access to basic social services in a country where eight people out of 10 live under the poverty line".  Rajaonarimampianina has promised to fight corruption and poverty, and improve the state of the law and human rights.

Prime Minister Roger Kolo tries to renew international support and move on from instability by announcing a new cabinet of technocrats and relatively political unknowns. Among the 31 members, only 2 are members of MAPAR. Even though it is the biggest party in parliament, most MAPAR members have refused to join the government after President Hery Rajaonarimampianina refused their choice for prime minister. The appointments were welcomed by the European Union, which has been sharply critical of the unstable political situation in the country in recent years.

Japan has donated $900,000 (US currency) towards the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in assistance to the disaster prone area of South Madagascar. When one-fourth of Madagascar's population is food insecure, Japan's assistance becomes more than just helpful.

A workshop is being held in Antananarivo to address prison overcrowding and reduce corruption. This workshop is focused on "faster processing of criminal cases and the development of alternatives to pre-trial detention" as ways to stop overcrowding. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Ministry of Justice are hosting the workshop.

Mr. Hery Marcial Rajaonarimampianina (president of Madagascar) and the Secretary-General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora discussed how to stop illegal timber trades in Madagascar. "I call on transit and destination States to undertake full investigations and, where appropriate, prosecute those involved in the illicit trade and urged all Parties to return all illegally traded timber back to Madagascar as the rightful owner of these stolen goods," says the president. Working along with CITES and ICCWC, the president has taken steps to minimize illegal deforestation of Madagascar's natural wildlife.
