CAD vocabulary - basic and advanced modeling techniques and introduction to parametric design.
This cluster will focus on general knowledge related to the topic of computational design. It will provide an introduction to how architectural tools emerged from different fields and how they keep on improving the discipline. It is a basic course which addresses people who need support in their parametric endeavors.
Participants will go through a series of assisted tutorials regarding nurbs modeling techniques in order to better appreciate the second part of the cluster regarding the automation of design processes.
This pavilion—flexible enough to host numerous KAT events—would be an expression of both applied physical forces and imposed design decisions acting as shape defining criteria. The final design is based on a formal concept—defined by the usage of natural forces in order to generate catenary arches, a structural concept—which is a result of the superimposition of origami logic in order to define load bearing structural elements, and an intelligent connection concept—which rely on no binder and allow the repeated assembly and disassembly of the structure. For such a complex task to be grasped at once, the process had to be split in two distinctive parts: the form finding script and the connection and perforation script.
In a sweeping review of the field of bio-inspired engineering and biomimicry in the Feb. 15 issue of the journal Science, two engineers at the University of California, San Diego, identify three characteristics of biological materials that they believe engineers would do well to emulate in man-made materials: light weight, toughness and strength.
