Other tablet makers have been reduced to offering individual products rather than integrated media platforms. They delude themselves if they think they can charge the same (as they have tried) as Apple for their various iPad wannabes—even if they deliver more bang for the buck technically. The only ones to understand this reality are the booksellers Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Both provide stripped-down tablets masquerading as e-readers for half, or less, of what it costs to buy a basic iPad 2. So, unless you are looking for a cheap tablet that lacks a camera, cellular connection, gyroscope and other bells and whistles, but works brilliantly as an e-reader, buy an iPad 2.

Fifty-two percent said that they used the iPad to present websites. Thirty-nine percent used the iPad in the classroom to share videos and presentations. And 30 percent stated that they used it for presenting Blackboard and PDFs.

When asked which apps were most helpful, those mentioned most frequently were: Safari, Mail, Keynote, iAnnotate, GoodReader, Evernote, Pages, Dropbox, Blackboard Mobile and YouTube.

But the timing for their launch is unclear.

Though consumers desire the iPad for the functions it performs, they want it more for what it is. Just as many preferred the iPod to the generic MP3 player, so too do they prefer the iPad to the generic “tablet.” Apple is succeeding in the category because it reinvented it. Now anyone that hopes to compete in it must do so by peddling products similar to it. And because of that, Apple will dominate the tablet category in much the same way it dominated the portable music player category. So there is a tablet market, but it’s been subsumed by the iPad market, just as the MP3 player market was engulfed by the market for the iPod.
