BBC stokes cult (speck spelling) of Zuckerberg

BBC stokes cult (speck spelling) of Zuckerberg | AJCann | Scoop.it

"On the first day we visited Facebook for the BBC film I was making, we didn't set eyes on Zuckerberg - or so we thought. But when we came in the next day, the receptionist told us he'd walked right past us and a family of tourists had also missed him. It wasn't uncommon, she told us, "he's like a Ninja". "

Why Facebook is the New Yahoo

"Sure, Facebook looks massively successful. With a mind-boggling 750 million users, the social site can do no wrong, right? Wrong. Look closer, and it looks like Facebook can do nothing right. The company has tried and failed to launch or integrate new services that might thrill users. But users aren’t thrilled. And now its strategy appears to be: Just copy Google+. Don’t look now, but Facebook is quickly becoming the new Yahoo."

Over-50s flock to social networks

Over-50s flock to social networks | AJCann | Scoop.it
Facebook use among over-50s in the UK has risen faster than any other group, according to research firm Nielsen. Overall, membership of the social network grew 41% between 2009 and 2011. Nielsen's findings contradict research published earlier this month that suggested the site's popularity was dwindling in the UK and USA.

One Per Cent: Facebook users have closer offline relationships

One Per Cent: Facebook users have closer offline relationships | AJCann | Scoop.it
Researchers surveyed 2,255 Americans, of which 925 were users of social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. They found that the average Facebook user has 229 friends on Facebook, which turns out to be 48% of their total offline social network.
It seems that people making these online connections could also be improving their offline lives. While the average American has just over two close relationships - defined as people with whom they discuss important matters - regular Facebook users had an average of 9% more close ties.
Facebook users also showed an increase in social support from others. While the average American scored 75 out of 100 on a scale of total support, Facebook users received an additional five point boost, equivalent to about half the support received as a result of being married or cohabiting.

Facebook and brain changes - NHS Choices

Facebook and brain changes - NHS Choices | AJCann | Scoop.it

"The study is capable of showing there may be a relationship between the variables but cannot determine whether online social networking causes a change in the brains of people, or if larger brain structures cause a person to be more inclined towards forming large online social networks. ... The Daily Mail’s assertion that Facebook increased the size of the amygdala is incorrect."

Facebook's Unbelievable Effect On The Rest Of The Web | AJCann | Scoop.it
If you exclude online video, and mobile web consumption, Elowitz says, "the web is shrinking." He says the rest of the web is quickly becoming "irrelevant," and argues that in the future companies will need to spend less time on SEO, and more time on optimizing for Facebook.
