Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich

"Universal education through schooling is not feasible. It would be no more feasible if it were attempted by means of alternative institutions built on the style of present schools. Neither new attitudes of teachers toward their pupils nor the proliferation of educational hardware or software (in classroom or bedroom), nor finally the attempt to expand the pedagogue's responsibility until it engulfs his pupils' lifetimes will deliver universal education. The current search for new educational funnels must be reversed into the search for their institutional inverse: educational webs which heighten the opportunity for each one to transform each moment of his living into one of learning, sharing, and caring. We hope to contribute concepts needed by those who conduct such counterfoil research on education--and also to those who seek alternatives to other established service industries.

Schools create jobs for schoolteachers, no matter what their pupils learn from them."

What is the social impact of university worth?

A university is often valued by the amount its students go on to earn and how much they contribute to economic growth. For a student, the cost-benefit analysis of going to university tends to compare their prospective graduate salary to the actual cost of their degree. But are we leaving something out? Is there a wider, social value to a university education that is being ignored?

Chromebook From Samsung Has Its Head in the Cloud | AJCann | Scoop.it
"Maybe the Chromebook concept would fly if it cost $180 instead of $500. Maybe it makes more sense if you rent it (students and corporations can lease Chromebooks for $20 to $30 a month). Maybe it will fly once the USA gets free coast-to-coast 4G cellular Internet, which should be just after hell freezes over."

The man who drew up the 'ugly map' of Britain | AJCann | Scoop.it
Type the phrase "scientists find the gene for" into Google and 68,000 results appear. Most of the hits are about human beings - which is a pretty impressive number, given that we have only 20,000 genes altogether. One hundred years after the death of Francis Galton, the "father of eugenics", geneticists are increasingly baffled by the nature versus nurture debate.

Sean Murphy, 38, from Doncaster, had seen his GP about the persistent problem and also tried traditional ointments and creams. Quote 'I know I could have gone to jail for up to 15 years for a firearms offence. My solicitor did a very good job. The best thing is that the wart has gone. It was giving me lot of trouble.'

In a new world of informational abundance, content curation is a new kind of authorship

In a new world of informational abundance, content curation is a new kind of authorship | AJCann | Scoop.it
Like any appropriated buzzword, the term “curation” has become nearly vacant of meaning. But, until we come up with a better one, it remains the semantic placeholder that best captures the central paradigm of Twitter as a conduit of discovery and direction for what is meaningful, interesting and relevant in the world.

Taking back the universities

Taking back the universities | AJCann | Scoop.it
Here it is argued that university education has lost its supposed purpose of furthering scientific knowledge; fostering and renewing critical appreciation of the arts and educating a critically self-aware population. Instead, it is seen as a space for the functional benefit of the economy, while the latter goal is dropped entirely.

Man versus machine: in which I curate | AJCann | Scoop.it
The medium is the message and curation is the new aggregation.
I've been using paper.li for a while now, but I think that experiment may have run it's course. The machine curation is patchy, sometimes throwing up serendipitous finds but mostly making noise which pushes people away. Lack of RSS feeds, not enough social features, paper.li was a good attempt but too flawed. Contrast paper.li (and Tweeted Times) with the new kid on the block, Scoop.it (h/t Terese Bird).

Branch campuses exploit desperation for financial gain

Branch campuses exploit desperation for financial gain | AJCann | Scoop.it
Powerful public universities are manipulating the “desperation of people whose university systems [have been] completely demolished” to make a “fortune” from overseas branch campuses, a senior university leader has claimed. Adam Habib, deputy vice-chancellor of research, innovation and advancement at the University of Johannesburg, told a conference in Toronto that on a recent tour of American universities, he was struck by how many were setting up campuses overseas. “I was struck by how many really manipulate the desperation of people whose university systems are completely demolished and utilise that opportunity to make a fortune so that they can pad the balance sheets.”

Complete rankers! University rankings ranked

Complete rankers! University rankings ranked | AJCann | Scoop.it
Everybody loves a good list, and that's especially true when it comes to ranking the world's universities. Whether it's the Times Higher Education's rankings in the UK, US News & World Report's annual list in America, or the ARWU in China, academics everywhere are always tempted to glance at where their institution falls in the charts.
Unless you're at Harvard, which seems to be at the top of all the charts this year, you probably don't care too much. Nor should you, says the European University Association, a Brussels-based organisation representing European higher education. A new EUA report criticises the increasing proliferation of university rankings and warns that they could be doing as much harm as good. In particular, the association warns, the rankings overemphasize research and underemphasize teaching. They also only analyze a few hundred of the thousands of universities around the world, leaving out whole regions.
The solution? Rather paradoxically the report's big call seems to be for still more rankings.

One Per Cent: Facebook users have closer offline relationships

One Per Cent: Facebook users have closer offline relationships | AJCann | Scoop.it
Researchers surveyed 2,255 Americans, of which 925 were users of social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. They found that the average Facebook user has 229 friends on Facebook, which turns out to be 48% of their total offline social network.
It seems that people making these online connections could also be improving their offline lives. While the average American has just over two close relationships - defined as people with whom they discuss important matters - regular Facebook users had an average of 9% more close ties.
Facebook users also showed an increase in social support from others. While the average American scored 75 out of 100 on a scale of total support, Facebook users received an additional five point boost, equivalent to about half the support received as a result of being married or cohabiting.

I wonder if Tumblr will be the space that students might curate, given the rapid rise in users and it's popularity amongst that age group?

I quite like Tumblr, posting with the bookmarlet is relatively easy and I like that you can easily view content people you follow are curating. I think the draw back is that commenting isn't standard, though you can easily connect your Disqus account. Looking forward to getting to grips with scoop.it
