"The TIA Glossary of Telecommunication Terms provides definitions and explanations for more than 5,800 engineering words and phrases in the ICT industry. Arranged alphabetically, and searchable by term, the glossary—originally based upon the Federal Standard 1037C Glossary of Technological Terms—is a dependable guide to unfamiliar vocabulary from “A” to “Zone of Silence.” Moreover, glossary items are cross-linked, so that unfamiliar terms in one definition are quickly accessible. And because it’s housed entirely online, the Glossary is available wherever an ..."
"There is nothing like an acronym to throw a roadblock into an otherwise simple translation project. The alphabet soups that some organizations churn out more efficiently than their own products can boggle even native speakers. Where do you start with a handful of letters often confuse even supposed experts?
A reporter from Korea noted that General James Thurman tried to ban acronyms from use noting that an acronym like “AA” had at least 12 different meanings “‘Build AA (Anti Aircraft) network in AA (Assembly Area) using AAA (Anti-Aircraft Artillery),’ no layman would understand what it means. ” The problem is that as translators we are not quite laymen, not quite specialists. Even specialized translators rarely have the luxury of specializing as deeply as do the people who wrote the documents we translate. Unlike General Thurman, we do not have the option of ..."
"Wikipedia may be experiencing a bit of a coolness crisis. A case in point: you give a presentation at a conference and the central point to support your conclusion is a Wikipedia quote. Not cool. You’re hotly debating a certain topic at a party and insist on a certain argument because you “read it in a Wikipedia article.” Again, not cool.
But there are plenty of ways that Wikipedia is still cool, and that’s particularly true for translators. And unlike so many other things that I mention in this column, the value of Wikipedia is not just for translators of “large” languages. In fact, I’d be surprised if any of you reading this ..."
"Grains are the seeds of cereal crops such as wheat, rye, rice, oats and barley and have been a staple food for humans for thousands of years. In pre-industrial times grains were commonly eaten whole but advances in the milling and processing of grains allowed large-scale separation and removal of the bran and germ, resulting in refined flour that consists mainly of the starchy endosperm. Refined flour became popular because it produced baked goods with a softer texture and extended freshness. However the bran and germ contain a host of important nutrients, which are lost when the grain is refined.
Nowadays it is increasingly recognised that foods made with whole grain can make an important contribution to ..."
"The need for a general glossary of the terminology used in rice production and rice research has been evident in the production of earlier documents, such as the Dictionary of Commonly Used Terms in Crop Improvement With particular reference to Rice, by A.O. Abifarin of IITA, Nigeria, in 1984, and the Rice Production Glossary published by IRRI in 1990.
The present Glossary, loaded in September 1996, includes most of the terms used in these books and many more. Major additions came from glossaries annexed to proceedings of rice conferences and workshops published in the past by IRRI and partners.
It was first compiled by Janice Puckridge. Gene Hettel coordinated the review by IRRI scientists who made various additions and corrections. Jay Maclean did the final sorting and collation and prepared the Glossary for the Web page.
Thanks to all those who contributed to the Glossary. It is a tedious rather than a glamorous task, but the efforts by the various scientists and editors should be much appreciated by all who use this Glossary.
The definitions given herein pertain only to the agricultural usage of the terms, many of which have other or broader meanings not described. However, given this restriction, it would nevertheless be presumptuous to suggest that the Glossary is fully accurate or complete. We welcome and ..."

"A strange title I know, but I thought I could indulge two of my favourite pastimes at the same time… first the SDL OpenExchange, and the second customising stuff.
I may have mentioned the SDL OpenExchange from time to time in my articles… I do like the OpenExchange… because this is a unique feature of the SDL Language Technologies Platform that is probably underestimated by many users who think it’s only a few little apps that you can download to perform the odd useful function here and there.
In fact it’s much more than that and there is a complete SDK and set of APIs accompanying Studio and MultiTerm that allow a developer to ..."

"The Canadian Airspace Review (CAR), a joint government/users project initiated in 1985, conducted an in-depth study of policies, rules and procedures relating to the management and operation of the Air Navigation System (ANS). As part of its findings, the CAR recommended the publication of a glossary of aeronautical terms and definitions used by Canadian pilots, controllers and flight service specialists, the basic objective of such a glossary being to contribute to the continued efficiency and safety of the air navigation system by doing the following:
(a) promoting greater understanding of aeronautical terminology among providers and users of air traffic services;
(b) facilitating access to aeronautical information necessary for the conduct of air operations; and
(c) increasing awareness, in the national and international aviation communities, of differences in aeronautical terminology as used in Canada, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
In keeping with the intent of the appropriate CAR recommendations, Transport Canada, in conjunction with the Department of National Defence and in consultation with the Canadian civil aviation community, developed the Pilot/Controller Glossary to serve as a reference document for the entire Canadian aviation community. Now known as the Glossary for Pilots and Air Traffic Services Personnel, the text has been revised in conjunction with NAV CANADA as well. This glossary in no way constitutes a regulatory
document, but serves rather to illustrate the..."

"In many countries around the world the curriculum is increasingly viewed as laying the foundation for comprehensive educational reforms aimed at achieving quality learning outcomes. Contemporary curriculum development processes more frequently involve public discussion and consultation with a range of stakeholders, and the curriculum is progressively evolving into a topic of debate engaging policymakers, experts, practitioners, and society at large.
Curriculum terminology is no longer only used by specialists in this field who are aware of all the complexities involved, and this may generate confusion and misinterpretation. Many curriculum-related terms are frequently used interchangeably even if they refer to different concepts and, depending on the context, the same term may be understood in many different ways by various stakeholders. An example is the diversity of definitions for the term ‘curriculum’, a word that in many national languages does not even exist.
The main purpose of the UNESCO IBE Glossary of curriculum-related terminology is not to establish standard universally applicable definitions. Rather, it is intended to be a working reference tool that can be used in a range of activities and help to stimulate reflection among all those involved in curriculum development initiatives. Given the strong connection between concepts and practice, such a Glossary may contribute to productive reflection within national education systems, as well as regional and international contexts, on the ..."
