(TOOL) - Practical Guide for Professional Conference Interpreters | aiic.net | Glossarissimo! | Scoop.it

"At a time when multilingual conferences are becoming ever more specialised and technically complex, when an impersonal machine assigns an interpreter to a meeting on tin in the morning and one on dairy products in the afternoon, when the number of working languages is increasing as rapidly as the use of consecutive is declining, and when newly-fledged (and sometimes decidedly under-fledged) colleagues are being hastily drafted in to fill ever more booths, there is a pressing need to maintain quality and standards in the profession of conference interpreting, to motivate newcomers to do so and show them how, and generally to recognise that the profession’s reputation for quality and integrity rests on the sum of our individual efforts to secure it.

This guide has therefore been put together to share practical advice on professional practice in conference interpreting, with the aim of contributing to high standards of professionalism and quality interpretation, and thereby to the dignity and integrity of our profession. The present version of this guide is an updated and expanded edition, based on one published in 1990.
The contents of this vademecum reflect the standards of quality, integrity, and professionalism espoused by the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), a professional association that represents conference interpreters worldwide and sets standards for the profession that are internationally recognised, in particular the AIIC Code of Professional Ethics and Professional Standards. Many practical suggestions have also been distilled from bouquets and brickbats shared by delegates, clients, and ..."

"Despite the time that has passed since the adoption in 1961 of the Hague Convention abolishing the requirement to legalise foreign public documents, new participating countries are being added all the time.⊃1; There are many translators – and, unfortunately, public officials – who still do not have a clear idea of what the apostille is, what it is used for, and what to do with it.

To dispel any doubts, the best thing would be to go straight to the actual text of the Convention. I therefore offer readers a short walk through this important instrument. We will use the official French and English versions and the Spanish version published in the Official State Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado – BOE)."

(TOOL) - Multifultor | TechWriter's Home

(TOOL) - Multifultor | TechWriter's Home | Glossarissimo! | Scoop.it

"Multifultor is a timesaving program for looking up terminology in dictionaries and almost any data source which you can use to look up a word or phrase. Multifultor can search websites, dictionaries, files and the Windows Index as data sources. Multifultor can help you to save time and effort with the following four sophisticated functions:

– You do not need to enter the search term manually (either a word or a phrase): Multifultor can capture text from the cursor position in the currently active application. This avoids typing errors and problems entering characters in languages if you do not have the correct keyboard or locale settings (for example, Japanese). You can still enter text manually using the keyboard or paste text from theclipboard.

– You do not need to enter a URL or custom settings every time you search the web. Multifultor stores a list of all data sources that you use on a regular basis, including websites and dictionaries. Multifultor knows exactly where to look when you click the name of the data source or press the hotkey combination.

– You can use Multifultor to search multiple data sources with a single click. This saves time in two ways: You only need to enter the search text once and you can search several sources at the same time. If you search four data sources at once and find a useful hit in the second data source before the search has completed, you can simply ignore any further results."

The U.S. National Security Agency has published a 643-page document titled, “Untangling the Web: A Guide to Internet Research” Wired reports.

The book offers advice for how to use search engines, the Internet Archive, and various online tools, but Wired points out that the most interesting chapter is titled, “Google Hacking”.

Google hacking is nothing new but this previously classified document was released to the public because of a request filed by a website called MuckRock, which charges fees to process public records for activists.

While nothing in the book is illegal, the chapters detail ways the average citizen can discover speadsheets full of passwords in Russia just by typing random strings of characters into Google."

- Babylon .BGL files, complete with images and resources
- StarDict .ifo/.dict./.idx/.syn dictionaries
- Dictd .index/.dict(.dz) dictionary files
- ABBYY Lingvo .dsl source files, together with abbreviations. The files can be optionally compressed with dictzip. Dictionary resources can be packed together into a .zip file.
- ABBYY Lingvo .lsa/.dat audio archives. Those can be indexed separately, or be referred to from .dsl files.
• Support for Wikipedia, Wiktionary, or any other MediaWiki-based sites to perform lookups in.

• Ability to run arbitrary external programs for audio playback or content generation (text-to-speech, man pages etc) (use the latest Git version for this)

• Ability to index arbitrary directories with audio files for pronunciation lookups.

• Support for global hotkeys. You can spawn the program window at any point, or directly translate a word from the clipboard.
• Tabbed browsing in a modern Qt 4 interface.
• Cross-platform: Linux/X11 and Windows + portable to others.

(TOOL) - Translation Tribulations: Translating embedded objects in Microsoft Office documents | Kevin Lossner | Glossarissimo! | Scoop.it

"Yesterday a colleague sent me a note to say he had been searching my blog for information about translating compound Microsoft Office documents (that is documents with embedded objects) in memoQ and couldn't find any. I presume he was referring to the article about how often one CAT tool is not enough - combined workflows with other tools can frequently help solve many tricky translation problems, and DVX2 or STAR TRANSIT are definitely useful options for preparing compound Microsoft Office documents for translation in memoQ. Some time ago I recommended using STAR TRANSIT as a pre-processing tool to one of my agency friends, and he carried out a very large, complex project successfully using memoQ's excellent integration features for STAR TRANSIT projects.

There is, of course, another simple way to translate the embedded objects in a Microsoft Office document that does not involve purchasing other software licenses. I don't usually talk about it, because there are a few limitations, and until recently I had not figured out how to avoid corrupting the files when I tried to do things the "easy" way. This approach is not limited to memoQ and will actually work with most CAT tools - so SDL Trados Studio users can do this as well, for ..."

"I’m a great fan of IntelliWebSearch, a time-saving method for performing Internet terminology searches. Basically, it’s a series of keyboard-based macros that lets you click a word in any Windows application and go straight to a website that you’ve defined in your search settings using a short-cut. It was created by Michael Farrell, an Italian-English translator. In medical translation it’s very useful for searching for drugs, diseases and terminology on sites such as the UK eMC, Medscape, EDQM Standard Terms or the EMA itself."

(TOOL)-(EN)-(ES) - In Search of the Right Equivalents for Medical Terms: Dictionaries, Forums, Parallel Texts, etc. | Silvia Schrage (Caduceus) | Glossarissimo! | Scoop.it

"Caduceus is the semi-annual publication of the Medical Division of the American Translators Association.

When translating terms that refer to life-threatening conditions, finding the correct equivalent is especially crucial. Unfortunately, it’s not always easy.

During a translation project, the term “stroke” came under intense scrutiny at a review session that included translators, interpreters, doctors and community representatives. One interpreter suggested the translation “embolia”; another preferred “derrame cerebral” (cerebral hemorrhage). A third interpreter pointed out that both “embolia” and “derrame cerebral” were kinds of strokes, but the problem was that they had different or even opposite causes. Commonly-used references may yield translations for a wide variety of synonyms, superordinates or hypernyms, and hyponyms [defined later in this article]: embolism, brain hemorrhage, paralysis attack, sudden attack, brain attack ..."
