Forests as food: New report highlights important relationship between forest landscapes and healthy diets - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
It’s a bit ironic that while wild foraged ingredients are increasingly popping up on Michelin-starred menus around the world, the communities who have traditionally subsisted on these foods are consuming them less and less. Baobab fruit and bush mango for vitamins and minerals; bushmeat for fats and micronutrients; bamboo shoots for fiber; ferns for complex carbohydrates and various essential oils …

Smallholder farmers in REDD+ sites: The cost of missed opportunities - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

Smallholder farmers in REDD+ sites: The cost of missed opportunities - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
Paying farmers not to clear forests could be more effective – if we had a better idea of how much income they really lose. It is clear that REDD+ has changed from what was first envisaged. First formulated in 2005 as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the approach attracted high hopes for slowing down climate …

Estimating smallholder opportunity costs of REDD+: A pantropical analysis from households to carbon and back - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

Compensating forest users for the opportunity costs of foregoing deforestation and degradation was one of the original distinguishing features of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation). In the early days of REDD+, such costs for tropical smallholders were believed to be quite low, but this has increasingly been questioned. A decade after the concept was proposed, direct payments to …

Chapter 5 - The Domestication and Commercialization of Indigenous Trees in Agroforestry for the Alleviation of Poverty | World Agroforestry Centre

The diversification of farming systems with trees producing useful food and nonfood products is aimed at enhanced agroecosystem functions and poverty alleviation arising out of expanded and enriched trade opportunities in the rural economy. To progress towards these aims we discuss here appropriate domestication strategies, the early phase of a research program involving local farmers, the market opportunities, and the appropriate deployment of improved cultivars.

Adoption of agroforestry and the impact on household food security among farmers in Malawi | World Agroforestry Centre

Agroforestry is increasingly regarded as an important adaptation and mitigation strategy against climate change. In particular, the use of fertilizer trees has been promoted as a practice that contributes to improved soil fertilitythrough nitrogen fixation, by increasing supply of nutrients for crop production. While a lot of the evidence onthe impact of fertilizer trees relies on on-farm experiments and correlational analysis, there is a paucity ofrigorous evidence under actual smallholder farming conditions.

ICRAF presents the role of evidence and improved soil management for land restoration in sub-Saharan Africa at European Development Days - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

ICRAF presents the role of evidence and improved soil management for land restoration in sub-Saharan Africa at European Development Days - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
Approximately 70% of Africa’s population depends on its agriculture-based economy for their livelihoods, underscoring the importance of soil to the sector. Fertile soils across the continent are under threat, however, due in large part to climate change and poor land management which leads to the depletion of nutrients and soil organic matter and increased soil erosion. During the recent European …

Managing degraded forests, a new priority in the Brazilian Amazon - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

Managing degraded forests, a new priority in the Brazilian Amazon - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
Overview  By taking drastic steps, Brazil has succeeded in reducing the annual deforestation rate for Amazonia from 27 770 km2 in 2005 to 5 830 km2 in 2015. However, those steps have not had any effect on forest degradation, notably the partial destruction of the canopy. In the Brazilian Amazon, degraded forests dominate the landscape along pioneer fronts. The region …

Challenges and approaches for inclusive value-chain development: introduction - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

Overview  Growing demand for higher-value agricultural products presents new opportunities for smallholders and market agents in developing countries. However, responding to these opportunities can require significant investment for enhancing productive capacities, business skills, and infrastructure. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, and food processors recognize the opportunity — and need — to support the integration of smallholders and small and medium-sized …

Chapter 13 - Agroforestry Tree Products (AFTPs) | World Agroforestry Centre

An analysis of the constraints facing smallholder farmers in the tropics has identified many interactions between environmental, social and economic factors that create the downward spiral of the -cycle of land degradation and social deprivation. This paper examines the numerous likely impacts of both the domestication of agroforestry trees and the commercialization of their products, and identifies who are the winners and the losers from these activities - and especially evaluates how they impact on the livelihoods of the farmers who cultivate and market them.

Motivation Matters: Lessons for REDD+ Participatory Measurement, Reporting and Verification from Three Decades of Child Health Participatory Monitoring in Indonesia - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
Abstract Participatory Measurement, Reporting and Verification (PMRV), in the context of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation with its co-benefits (REDD+) requires sustained monitoring and reporting by community members. This requirement appears challenging and has yet to be achieved. Other successful, long established, community self-monitoring and reporting systems may provide valuable lessons. The Indonesian integrated village healthcare program (Posyandu) …

Can REDD+ help Brazil roll back rising deforestation rates? - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry | Ecosystèmes Tropicaux | Scoop.it
In Brazil, the role of REDD+ in stemming deforestation since 2004 is unclear — as is its potential for reversing the recent upward trend. Land-use change represents more than 60 percent of Brazil’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the Amazon accounts for 65.2 percent of that amount, according to government figures, although those numbers are sometimes contested. Much of the …

'Turning the onus of restoration into a bonus for farmers' in Brazil - Forests, Trees and Agroforestry

A recent article on research in Brazil yields seven flexible options for farmers who wish to use agroforestry as a means to comply with regulations while benefitting their land and livelihoods. Setting aside conservation areas on Brazil’s farms and rural properties isn’t just good for the ecosystem, the climate and biodiversity – it’s the law. In 2012, the country passed …

What is the evidence for the contribution of forests to poverty alleviation? A systematic map protocol | World Agroforestry Centre

Background: Forests provide an essential resource that support the livelihoods of an estimated 20% of the global population. Forests are thought to serve in three primary roles to support livelihoods: subsistence, safety nets, and pathways to prosperity. While we have a working understanding of how poor people depend on forests in individual sites and countries, much of this evidence is dispersed and not easily accessible.
