From Land Cover to Land Use: A Methodology to Assess Land Use from Remote Sensing Data

From Land Cover to Land Use: A Methodology to Assess Land Use from Remote Sensing Data | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

The “land use” concept has evolved during recent decades and it is now considered as the socioeconomic function of land. Land use representation and land use change assessment through remote sensing still remains one of the major challenges for the remote sensing scientific community. In this paper we present a methodological approach based on remote sensing techniques to assess land use in accordance with the requirements of the United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention, UNFCCC (1995). The methodology is based mainly on the recognition of the land key elements and their function and on the adoption of the “predominant land use” criteria in the classification scheme settled by rules. The concept that underpins these rules is that the land use function of land can be expressed through hierarchical relationships among key land elements, and that these functional relationships are based on thresholds reflecting the relevance and predominance of key land elements in the observed area. When analyses are supported by high (10–30 m) or very high ( < 10 m) spatial resolution remote sensing data, the methodology provides a systematic approach for the representation of land use that is consistent with the concepts and methodologies developed by the International Panel on Climate Change(IPCC) to fulfill UNFCCC commitments. In particular, data with high and very high spatial resolution provide good results, with overall accuracies above 87% in the identification of key land elements that characterize land use classes. The methodology could be used to assess land use in any context (e.g., for any land use category or in any country and region) as it is based on the definition of user/project rules that should be tailored on the land use function of any territory.

Using Python to calculate NDVI with multiband imagery

Using Python to calculate NDVI with multiband imagery | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

The following is a helpful section of python code to assist with calculating NDVI (Normalised Difference Vegetation Index) using the arcpy site package. The Image Analysis Window allows you to see this visually, but if you want the values in the raster itself, then you will need to use this code.

Thanks go to the Esri team for explaining this new notation in the Spatial Analyst module of arcpy (arcpy.sa). The arcpy.sa module calculates rasters more effectively than the Raster Calculator at 9.x, as it uses the number crunching power of Python. Also, dot notation for multiple bands no longer works in the Raster Calculator at 10, so this code is a optimised replacement for this loss in functionality.

Fun With GIS 116: Carbon Density | GIS Education Community | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

Carbon density is an issue of huge concern for global climate change and land use decision making: What’s the amount of live woody biomass over a given parcel of land? WHRC researchers have created a dataset for the land between the Tropics, at 500m resolution, and posted it in ArcGIS Online. You can see it in an embedded map, and read about the impact of carbon, and how the data were assembled.

Putting multifunctional landscapes into climate negotiations | Agroforestry World Blog

Putting multifunctional landscapes into climate negotiations | Agroforestry World Blog | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

Climate Change will have an impact on every person in the world. It is well documented that it will impact smallholder farmers the most because of the effect on their crops. On the other hand, the effects of climatic change on trees within landscapes are often not considered. However, a recently released book by World Agroforestry Centre scientists warn that climate change will have a much greater impact on the rural poor if climate debates remain focused on forests rather than on the role of trees within multifunctional landscapes. By paying smallholder farmers for ecosystem services that keep climate resilient trees on landscapes, the writers argue those trees will contribute to adaptation and mitigation simultaneously.

Google Maps Mania: Agricultural Zoning on Google Maps

Google Maps Mania: Agricultural Zoning on Google Maps | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

The Canadian Agriculture Land Commission are using Google Maps to show the location of Agricultural Land Reserve zones. Agricultural Land Reserve zones are areas where agriculture is recognized as the priority use. Farming is encouraged and non-agricultural uses are controlled.

The agricultural zones are shaded green on the map (although anyone who has ever played SimCity can tell you they should be shaded yellow) . It is possible to search the map using a postal address to see if it falls within an Agricultural Land Reserve area. If the location is inside the green area it means it is in the ALR.

Urban agriculture in Brazil’s favelas

Urban agriculture in Brazil’s favelas | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

"Established in 2004 by local social entrepreneur Hans Dieter Temp, an organisation called Cidades sem Fome (Cities Without Hunger) is working to reduce hunger and joblessness among some of the most economically deprived areas of Sao Paulo, through urban agriculture.
Local community members are given the tools and training to start producing fruit and vegetables on unused land acquired by the organisation. This not only brings much needed quality produce and food security to the community, but it is also addressing the issue of unemployment – a constant problem in Brazil’s favelas."

A wonderful project that is not only dealing with malnutrition and unemployment but is contributing to people's sense of importance, which is invaluable.

A shining example that shows that the way forward is through people working together.

Automating your workflows with Python - Blogs - Exprodat

Automating your workflows with Python - Blogs - Exprodat | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

In today’s E&P industry the maxim “time is money” could never be more true. How much time is spent running the same process, the same workflow, clicking the same mouse buttons, tapping the same keys?
Using GIS we have shortened workflows that take many hours into mere minutes, or from months into days. GIS tools may never be able to replace the ZMaps or Petrels but in a first pass review of a new area GIS tools are well positioned to be the first analysis software to use, as they can consume many different types of data and allow you to run many types of analysis.

Peak Meat: U.S. Meat Consumption Falling

Peak Meat: U.S. Meat Consumption Falling | DigitalRural | Scoop.it

"U.S. meat consumption has peaked. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show that meat eating across the country fell from the 2004 high point of 184 pounds (83 kilograms) per person to 171 pounds in 2011. Early estimates for 2012 project a further reduction in American meat eating to 166 pounds, making for a 10 percent drop over the eight-year period. For a society that lives high on the food chain, this new trend could signal the end of meat’s mealtime dominance." (Source: Earth Policy Institute)

Agência FAPESP – The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (RIO+20), to be held in Brazil this June, will not have the same legislative character as ECO-92, whose legacy permanently transformed the world’s perspective on the environment. However, RIO+20 could have a world impact of similar magnitude to ECO-92 if it manages to overcome the challenge of integrating the three pillars of sustainable development in a balanced manner. These pillars correspond to environmental, economic and social considerations.
