Via - Community Alliance for Global Justice Institutions and corporations involved with pushing GMOs into South Africa are now partners of the Gates Foundation and they’re working to spread GMOs through out Africa. South Africa is the one country amongst Africa’s 54 countries where GMOs have been grown for several years. This is because Monsanto and various western “development” programs including USAID, used South Africa as the entering wedge to the continent—it was the biggest economy, most closely tied in to global capitalism, etc. The African Centre for Biodiversity found, and I quote, “that Monsanto controls 50% of the maize seed market…the biotech giant’s grip on the market is absolute…

Did Monsanto actually plant genetically modified alfalfa before it was deregulated by the USDA? There is some shocking evidence that, until recently, was withheld from the public showing that Monsanto’s genetically altered alfalfa may have been set free in 2003 — a full two years or more before it was deregulated in 2005. In a letter, obtained by NaturalSociety with permission to post for public viewing, it becomes clear that the USDA may have turned a blind eye to the entire situation, allowing widespread GMO contamination of GMO-free crops. http://www.nationofchange.org/letter-shows-monsanto-planted-gmos-usda-approval-1335971971

West Coast salmon, an already threatened species, are the victim of a new, potentially detrimental threat according to a recent evaluation conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service. NOAA’s Fisheries Services identified the culprits as three pesticides commonly used in more than 100 pesticide products for home and agricultural applications including the treatment of soy, cotton, corn, grapes and Christmas trees: triflurali, oryzalin and pendimenthalin.

The debate is over: We are killing our earth, our ecosystems and, as top of the food chain, human health with the systemic use of pesticides in our moncrop, big agriculture, gmo approach to growing our now poisoned food supply. Three recent scientific studies offer compelling evidence linking pesticides to global declines in bee populations.

THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY PALM OIL FARMING IS IRREVERSIBLE. According to a report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the deforestation that has already taken place in Indonesia for palm oil, and the illegal logging that is still occurring there now, indicate that most of the country’s rainforest will have been destroyed entirely by the year 2022. The mass clearing of trees for farmland disturbs the ecosystem of the rainforest by decimating rare and exotic flora and fauna. With the planting of a single crop plantation, the natural biodiversity of the rainforest is lost. The mono-crop culture that has long-plagued environmentalists in the west displaces or destroys most of the species in a single sitting, as they are unable to adapt to living within vast acres of a single crop. The environment, habitats and species that are destroyed have lived together since the dawn of the rainforest, and the damage caused by palm oil farming is irreversible. In the words of WWF employee Junaida Payne, transporting this type of agriculture to the rainforest creates ‘biological deserts’.

In a surreal press conference, Beef Products Inc took its best shot at making up for its silence during weeks of public lashing over what has been dubbed “pink slime,” an additive in ground beef made through a high-tech process that BPI invented. (See my previous posts here and here.) The event came in the wake of major grocery chains announcing they would stop selling beef containing the filler. Intensive farming really emphasizes high productivity, and high input of capital investment in technology and machinery. It involves growing high yield crops on a relatively small piece of land. It requires using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides to get rid of pests and competing crops, and using highly efficient and advanced machinery to cultivate, plant, and harvest. The African Centre for Biosafety (ACB) is has expressed outrage after finding that several food products, including baby cereal, maize meal, a dietary supplement for active sports people and wheat-free cereal, have tested positive for genetically modified (GM) content, but are all unlabelled. From 1 October, 2011, food producers, importers and packagers are required by law, in terms of the Consumer Protection Act and its Regulations, to label GM foods and marketing materials where the genetically modified (GM) content is at least 5%. In other words, the trigger for labelling is where the GM content is 5% or more.
