Report leaves burden of GMO contamination with 'victim;' 'fails to address the root cause of the problem -- transgenic contamination,'

Organic farmers and allies have slammed a USDA committee report for kowtowing to the interests of genetically modified crop growers and the biotechnology industry.

“The AC21 report takes responsibility for GE contamination prevention out of the hands of USDA and the biotech industry where it belongs and puts it squarely on the backs of organic and non-GE farmers,” said Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director at Center for Food Safety and a NOC member. "It is outrageous that those being most harmed by GE contamination are the ones that would be responsible for paying into an insurance program outlined in the report. The liable party for contamination should be the patent holder of the gene technology, not the farmer who grows its seed. The companies that profit from the technology should develop a fund from which contaminated farmers can be compensated. Yet during the committee’s meetings, there was virtually no discussion about the idea of a patent-holder funded compensation fund." ... http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2012/11/21-4

Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Obesity could be the most catastrophic impact of processed food

Alzheimer's, Diabetes, Obesity could be the most catastrophic impact of processed food | YOUR FOOD, YOUR HEALTH: Latest on BiotechFood, GMOs, Pesticides, Chemicals, CAFOs, Industrial Food | Scoop.it

George Monbiot: There is evidence that poor diet is one cause of Alzheimer's. If ever there was a case for the precautionary principle, this is it. Because regulation is light, the industry can kill off the only effective system for telling us how much fat, sugar and salt food contains. When you raise the subject of over-eating and obesity, you often see people at their worst. The comment threads discussing these issues reveal a legion of bullies who appear to delight in other people's problems.... http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/sep/10/alzheimers-junk-food-catastrophic-effect?CMP=twt_gu
