Whether you call it agroecology or eco-agriculture or permaculture these all offer alternative approaches to industrial agriculture that are far more sustainable. This page will highlight good, bad and neutral news related to environmental, economical and socially sustainable agriculture.
In this first of three lessons spanning the topic of Plant Nutrition, we examine primarily the energetics and mechanisms of nutrient uptake and transport. These processes are particularly well illustrated by an examination of the essential nutrient potassium (K), and the closely related element sodium (Na). We also examine the challenges associated with providing plants with sufficient K to support vigorous growth, and the detrimental effects of sodium accumulation in soils. Finally, we examine efforts to improve the salinity tolerance of crop plants. (Co-authored with Michael Blatt).

Darin Hoagland's insight:
I like what the non-profit organization Farm-X is doing. Integrated agricultural, environmental, social and economic solutions are compelling since the related problems we face are interconnected as well.
One of my favorite conferences with a great all-day ecofarm bustour that is especially well worth it. If you love farming and growing things you will find all kinds of people at this event you have something in common with.

Darin Hoagland's insight:
The combination of green economy, hi-tech entrepreneurship and international collaboration are a winning combination.
Nice explainer video about the importance of Mycorrhizae and plant health. Increasing agricultural food supply means maintaining good soil health and mycorrhizae are a big part of making soil nutrients to available plants. Replenishing depleted soil especially after anti-fungal applications and reducing the myorrhizae application cost to farmers are key.
Find local seasonal fruit, veggies and nuts with this easy tool.
Darin Hoagland's insight:
I just ran across another "find your local seasonal produce" online tool. It is from the National Resources Defense Counsel (NRDC). It focuses mostly on the state-wide level. It offers great advice in selecting, storing and preparing a wide variety of seasonal crops as well.
