Agriculture and the Natural World
This is an exploration of agriculture and how it relates to the environment.  Whether you call it agroecology or eco-agriculture or permaculture these all offer alternative approaches to industrial agriculture that are far more sustainable. This page will highlight good, bad and neutral news related to environmental, economical and socially sustainable agriculture.

New Teaching Tool, "Plant Nutrition 1: Membrane Transport and Energetics, Potassium Nutrition, & Sodium Toxicity"

New Teaching Tool, "Plant Nutrition 1: Membrane Transport and Energetics, Potassium Nutrition, & Sodium Toxicity" | Agriculture and the Natural World | Scoop.it

In this first of three lessons spanning the topic of Plant Nutrition, we examine primarily the energetics and mechanisms of nutrient uptake and transport. These processes are particularly well illustrated by an examination of the essential nutrient potassium (K), and the closely related element sodium (Na). We also examine the challenges associated with providing plants with sufficient K to support vigorous growth, and the detrimental effects of sodium accumulation in soils. Finally, we examine efforts to improve the salinity tolerance of crop plants. (Co-authored with Michael Blatt).

Lose Your Lawn the Bay-Friendly Way

Lose Your Lawn the Bay-Friendly Way | Agriculture and the Natural World | Scoop.it
Replace your lawn with a healthy garden that works for you. By using Bay-Friendly practices, you can conserve water, natural resources and prevent pollution. And with sheet mulching, you can plant directly on top of the lawn, saving time and money.
Darin Hoagland's insight:

Lawns have a traditional place in landscaping but unfortunately are a waste of time and resources for most residential or even commercial locations.  Weeding, fertilizing, mowing and watering efforts are much reduced in an established climate-appropriate native-friendly landscaping application.   Lose your lawn and gain a more beautiful and sustainable landscape.

Mycorrhizae on the History Channel

Via Jean-Michel Ané
Darin Hoagland's insight:

Nice explainer video about the importance of Mycorrhizae and plant health.  Increasing agricultural food supply means maintaining good soil health and mycorrhizae are a big part of making soil nutrients to available plants.  Replenishing depleted soil especially after anti-fungal applications and reducing the myorrhizae application cost to farmers are key.

How much do people really know about agriculture?

We asked people on the street in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago questions about agriculture. Watch the video to find out what their answers were to quest...
Darin Hoagland's insight:

This is an interesting but not surprising set of interviews about farming from everyday Americans on the street of two big cities.  Most people do not know much about farming and agriculture but also readily admit how important it is...once they think about it. It is a wonderful thing that agriculture now can feed so many and allow the vast majority of us to pursue so many non-farm careers. Unfortunately this means many are very detached from where their food comes from. This remains a challenge in a number of ways.
