Demand For Agile Skills Outstripping Supply

Demand For Agile Skills Outstripping Supply | Agile, Scrum and DSDM Project Management | Scoop.it
The supply of agile professionals can't keep up with the demand. That's great news for coaches and practitioners, but bad news for companies hoping to implement agility cheaply.
Chris Fortuin's insight:

Independent studies in the US and UK have shown that the demand for Agile skills is outstripping supply. Good news for job searchers.

Downside is Agile implementations might fail because experience is relatively low and training has not kept pace with this trend.

With adequate training you can overcome these barriers. If you want to learn more about our Agile Scrum Master and AgilPM (based on DSM Atern) courses then go to http://yellowhouse.net/.

Nowadays many companies adopt an Agile approach to gain a competitive edge over their competitors. Scrum is worldwide the most popular method used in companies for Agile product delivery. DOD has made it illegal to do waterfall - naked ALM Blog - Experts in Visual Studio ALM, TFS, Visual Studio & Scrum | Agile, Scrum and DSDM Project Management | Scoop.it
Did you know that the DOD has made it illegal to do waterfall? For the first time in many years the Department of Defence (DOD) in the United States had made a major update to its procurement rules.
Chris Fortuin's insight:

The US Department of Defence mandated waterfall in the past and is now mandating contractors to use an Agile approach in IT projects. This is good news for the IT industry to boost project success rates. This is also a good indicator that executive management is convinced of the Agile benefits and leading the way.

Annual State of Agile Development Survey Results | VersionOne

Annual State of Agile Development Survey Results | VersionOne | Agile, Scrum and DSDM Project Management | Scoop.it
Access the leading agile industry survey about Agile Adoption & Use, Agile Benefits, Agile Knowledge & Execution, and Agile Tools.
Chris Fortuin's insight:

The annual Agile Development Survey is a great overview of what is happening in companies using Agile and shows that Agile is maturing. Many findings from all over the world with adopting Agile are shared in this survey and you can be used to improve your own effectiveness with Agile.

When combining some of the key findings you can easily deduce that:

> Failure of Agile projects is caused when company philosophy and culture are at odds with Agile. Senior Executive involvement is therefore critical;

> Lack of exprience with Agile methods is another cause of failure with Agile. Make sure you people adequately trained and/or get an Agile Coach involved;

> The top benefit with Agile is the ability to manage changing priorities and accelerated time-to-market (eg. increased productivity). So use it in your projects where time is critical and change is expected which includes almost ALL software development projects.

Bruce Feiler: Agile programming -- for your family | Video on TED.com

Bruce Feiler has a radical idea: To deal with the stress of modern family life, go agile.
Chris Fortuin's insight:

Great Ted Talk from Bruce Feiler about Agile for the family!

Agile is people oriented, based on sound social, behavioral and motivational studies and aimed at improving our interactions so no surprise that Agile will cross over into our family life.

At my home we use some Agile practices in an non-invasive way like:
> during dinner we each share what was fun today, what will be fun tomorrow and if we need any help;
> to avoid stress when leaving for school in the morning we have discussed with the kids what means "ready to leave for school".

The takeaway from me in this Ted Talk is that I will propose my family to introduce a (weekly?) kind of retrospective and see what habits we like, what we don't like and what we want to start.

Also note that there are other people out there who take it to the next (more invasive) level at home with the kids. See for example http://scrumforkids.com/ and http://scrum4kids.blogspot.com.au/.

By nature Scrum is lightweight, simple to understand but extremely difficult to master. This article, from Ken Schwaber the co-inventor of Scrum, lists 15 obstacles you might encounter.

The Agile Inception Deck

The Agile Inception Deck | Agile, Scrum and DSDM Project Management | Scoop.it

It always starts out so hopefully! As you begin the project, you and your team are all on the same page. Or so it seems. Then you start actually building, and you realize that you all had something different in mind. Has it happened to you?

How many of your projects start off like this: You and your team get together at the start of your project thinking you are all on the same page?

Via Nicos Kourounakis
Chris Fortuin's insight:

Scrum is the most used product delivery framewok worldwide. The concept of managing Scrum as a project is considered part of the companies project management methodology.

For projects the first step is to perform an inception or start-up phase to establish adequate foundations and set expectations. Because Agile solutions emerge it is critical to establish project foundations that can also emerge. Call in the Agile Inception Deck from the Agile Samurai: it addresses the 10 most critical questions when you start a project, is easy to setup and flexible to adapt.

Agile product delivery is more and more becoming a collaborative engagement and so is Agile project management too. Hence, this deck is best used in a workshop with particpants collaborating and establishing a concensus when answering the 10 questions.
