Is agile software development’s future or a poisoned marketing term? | iWeek Magazine

Is agile software development’s future or a poisoned marketing term? | iWeek Magazine | Agile is eating the world | Scoop.it
A flawed understanding of the concept ‘agile development’ is creating conflicting views in the industry. According to a piece by Michael Azoff, of Ovum, agile is considered part of the future of.. (Is agile marketing a poisoned marketing term?
Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

“For an idea to change the world, it has to come into contact with the world. There is always a risk that a noble idea like agile could be twisted by self-interest or ignorance. Developers must defend and renew agile software development’s message that building software effectively requires strong feedback and respect for individuals. In particular, we must resist the myth that agile can work without empowering teams or without affecting the whole organisation.”

“Abandoning the term ‘agile’ is tempting from an intellectual purity point of view, but doing so would be defeatist and would threaten the progress that has been made over the last ten years,”

Agile development methodology has transformed processes, but developers do not operate in a silo.
Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

In agile terms, we can say that solution architects become technical servant leaders. "You end up with an environment that is more of a meritocracy where you're actually able to help rather than just dictate what needs to be done. That's a much harder environment to exist in."

CEOs: It Takes a Team to be Agile

CEOs: It Takes a Team to be Agile | Agile is eating the world | Scoop.it

"CEOs are constantly asking their global CIOs to be increasingly responsive and to get ever-more stuff done faster. Call it agile, call it organized chaos if you like, but this challenge is not new; how to work faster, smarter, better. What is new is that you can not ask one part of the organization to be agile, the IT organization, and then not have the rest of organization act in the same manner. This was what several of the CIOs noted. They know their IT organization can become agile."

How Medium Is Building a New Kind of Company with No Managers

How Medium Is Building a New Kind of Company with No Managers | Agile is eating the world | Scoop.it

For two years, Stirman managed a team at Twitter and never felt quite right about it. There was always the tension between being their boss and being their peer. He read all the ‘right’ books on management and took the advice to heart: don’t get too chummy, shield your team from anything they don’t need to know, ask them to identify roadblocks to progress, reward them all equally. He hated it.

“Management perspective looks at reports as resources — like how can you get the maximum value out of this person,” Stirman says. “But when I think resources, I think like natural gas or coal mines. Thinking about a person’s life that way just seemed really dehumanizing.”

Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

Doesn't this sound like agility applied to management? "You know what, we’re going to hire the best people we know and trust them to make decisions for us.’ All day people make decisions, own parts of the company, and act on them. The momentum this creates far outweighs someone making a bad decision. You also have the momentum to change course quickly.”

Is Having Fun Important for Agile Teams?

Is Having Fun Important for Agile Teams? | Agile is eating the world | Scoop.it

Working in an agile team can sometimes be stressful. For instance when the needs of the customers are unclear, if there is a lot of work to be done, or when team members are having difficulties doing their work. You might ask the question if having fun could reduce the feelings of stress, increase motivation, or increase productivity? And if that is true, then what can you do to have more fun in agile teams?

Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

It's important for all teams! Having fun creates happiness and happy people work better. For agile teams, it's even more important because people are more valued than processes. Also, agile teams accept failures. And to accept to sometimes loose means to be willing to play, which is somehow to be willing to have fun. So not only is it important to have fun, it is equally important to welcome fun.

Simplicity, feedback, communication, respect and courage, these eXtreme Programming (XP) values still inspire the team of the XP Days Benelux 2013 conference.
Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

"A company’s culture has a big influence on how to approach the change to agile. Think of openness, tolerance to mistakes, is someone allowed to speak up etc. I would even say that the company culture has more influence on success of agile adoption than a particular location in the world. Of course often a company culture is strongly related to a country’s culture."

Better Agile Adoptions

Better Agile Adoptions | Agile is eating the world | Scoop.it
Agile adoption is struggling - organisations mandate agile practices expecting teams to change their way of working but the changes don't seem to be sustainable.
Hoang-Anh Phan's insight:

"Mandated Agile adoptions tend to be repulsive to the intelligent, problem solving people that do the work. One reason might be that these folks literally love to solve problems, including “process problems”, like “how to implement Agile at our company.” Now, since most of the folks are introverted, if we do not ask them what they think, something really terrible happens: they do not tell us."
