Eating Right For Healthy Aging | Best Natural Cures Health Guide

Eating Right For Healthy Aging | Best Natural Cures Health Guide | Age Concern | Scoop.it

You have to eat right in order to stay healthy. If you do not eat right, your body does not receive the nutrients it needs to stay healthy!

You have to eat so it fuels your body. Similar to a motor vehicle, which you add gas to travel; the body requires food that promotes energy, making it go. Too much food is not good for you and not enough of the right food can be harmful to your health.

UN call for NGO Input to the Open-ended working group on Ageing – Deadline 15th May

Contribute as individual organizations to a consultation launched by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) aiming to gather the views of civil society on what a new legal instrument on the rights of older people should contain and help frame the discussions in the frame of the next the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG).

The OEWG on ageing, shall, as part of its mandate, and starting from its upcoming fourth session to be held in August 2013, consider proposals for an international legal instrument to promote and protect the rights and dignity of older persons and is asked to present to the UN General Assembly a proposal containing, inter alia, the main elements that should be included in said legal instrument which are not currently addressed sufficiently by existing mechanisms. Relevant non-governmental organizations are invited to provide inputs on the following elements to be included in a UN legal instrument: (a) purpose; (b) general principles; (c) definitions – particularly of old age/older persons; (d) equality and non-discrimination as applied to older persons; (e) specific human rights to be included; and (f) national and international supervisory mechanisms. This process will inform the discussion in the OEWG and demonstrate the interest of civil society and older persons to advance this dossier.

A Lost Language

A Lost Language | Age Concern | Scoop.it

«Dad was a university librarian. He loved good books, poetry, magazines, novels, essays — the same things I love. As I grew up, he bought dictionaries of all kinds to feed his and my obsessions: the rhyming one, the French one, the slang one, the two-volume Oxford English with print so small the set came with a magnifying glass. For my 25th birthday he bought me a Webster’s Third International Unabridged and wrote in it: “Cindy Darling, A good dictionary is like a magical bank account. The more you draw from it the richer you get.”
(...)
My father is still in there, somewhere, but our relationship will never be the same.»

A Cure for Ageing?: David Sinclair at TEDxSydney

Can we really cure ageing? David Sinclair thinks so, and he's going to try to prove it.

David Sinclair is a scientist and entrepreneur working on increasing human health, productivity, and lifespan. After co-discovering a molecular cause of aging at the Massachusetts Institute in Boston in the mid-1990s, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School where he is now a tenured Professor. In 2005, he founded the Glenn Laboratories for Aging Research at Harvard and serves as their Co-Director. He is also a Professor at the Lowy Cancer Centre at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.

His research is aimed at understanding why we grow old and using this knowledge to prevent and treat both rare and common diseases. He is perhaps best known for identifying resveratrol from red wine as an anti-aging molecule. He has founded four biotechnology companies; to treat age-related diseases (Sirtris), improve female reproductive health and IVF (OvaScience), treat type 2 diabetes (Cohbar), and develop vaccines against malaria, chlamydia, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and cancer (Genocea).

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Helping Seniors Learn New Technology

Helping Seniors Learn New Technology | Age Concern | Scoop.it
Computers and the Internet can open up new worlds for the elderly.

Several years ago Garrison Phillips, a retired actor, bought himself a Dell computer. He soon recognized that he didn’t know what to do with it. “I needed instruction,” he told me in an interview conducted — perhaps surprisingly — by e-mail. “The technology of the Internet, cell and iPhones was like a foreign language.”

Mr. Phillips then attended one of the first classes offered by OATS, a New York City nonprofit (the acronym stands for Older Adults Technology Services) that provides free tech training for seniors.
