Africa's Digital Revolution: Full Speed Ahead

Africa's Digital Revolution: Full Speed Ahead | African News | Scoop.it

By Marguerite Ward

In the last five years, Africa has undergone a phenomenon that analysts refer to as the continent’s “digital revolution.” A recent wave of investor capital to the continent signals that this trend is unlikely to change course any time soon. The virtual revolution means sudden improvements to education, health and political spheres - prompting more leaders to embrace technological development as they would more “traditional” development projects.

earthdog58's insight:

The upsurge of IT usage across the continent has brought Africa access to many important things from the wider world - but also (and I think more importantly) innovation from the developers and users across Africa has shown the world many new and different ways that the technology can be used.

Look at MPesa;  look at the amazingly inventive ways medical professions are making use of mobile phones to help remote communities; look at the primary school in Kisumu, Kenya that is using Kindles instead of paper textbooks.

The internet and mobile phones are changing Africa - but marvelous innovation is going the other way too.

Silicon Savannah: Africa's Transformative Digital Revolution

Silicon Savannah: Africa's Transformative Digital Revolution | African News | Scoop.it
In the space of 10 years, mobile phones and the Internet have changed African nations more significantly than any development since their independence from colonial powers. Now a growing group of entrepreneurs want to take things further.

Via Online Africa
earthdog58's insight:

The significance of the changes mobile technology has made to the continent cannot be over-stated - or perhaps even understood by people outside the continent.

African countries are leading the way in so many innovative uses of the technology - necessity is perhaps the driving force moving things forward in directions more 'developed' countries can't even see.

Hey, but we have "Candy Crush'.

ON INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day, Rwanda’s first ever Ms Geek Rwanda contest was held at Lemigo Hotel. Now, this was no glitzy young-girls-strutting-around-in-swimsuits kind of contest.
