Africa’s new colonists: American evangelical Christians

Africa’s new colonists: American evangelical Christians | African News | Scoop.it

Opponents of gay rights in Africa often suggest that homosexuality is “un-African”. But over the past few years, scholars and activists have warned with growing urgency that it is the increasing pitch of homophobia on the continent that is really un-African, because it is literally being imported in some cases. Their claim is that anti-gay sentiment is being consciously fomented and spread by huge evangelical churches in America, who see Africa as their shot at power and influence if America is lost.

REBECCA DAVIS spoke to the makers of a new documentary on the subject, God Loves Uganda.

earthdog58's insight:

One seriously worrying aspect of this, is the number of teenage/early twenties students who travel to various parts of the continent for a few weeks "volunteer" work - with no understanding of the social situations in the countries they visit as "tourists for Jesus", and often little or no experience of any kind of life outside their own small communities back in the US (or UK).

They come with a fiery zeal, full of Yeats' "passionate intensity", to help the poor benighted natives into the light, and an overwhelming obsession with homosexuality.

Seriously, what is it with evangelical Christians and homosexuality?

Two cheers for gay rights in Uganda

Two cheers for gay rights in Uganda | African News | Scoop.it
The emphasis on gay activism obscures Museveni's human rights abuses
earthdog58's insight:

Museveni is a clear example of a leader who has been in power too long.

I could keep on and on about how I don't understand homophobia.

Can someone please explain it to me? Why do so a many Christians spend so much time thinking about it?

The guy in the picture above is WATCHING gay porn on his laptop! OK, I don't fall into the "all homophobes are secretly gay" camp* - but there has to be something seriously non-Sydneyed up in the mind of a homophobe who goes out of his way to watch gay porn.

*hehe - see what I did there?
