Timbuktu mayor: Mali rebels torched library of historic manuscripts

Timbuktu mayor: Mali rebels torched library of historic manuscripts | African renaissance and Culture | Scoop.it
Fleeing Islamist insurgents burnt two buildings containing priceless books as French-led troops approached, says mayor
Chris Sparks's insight:

As a South African and human being I am devastated to hear this tragic destruction of African and world heritage. It is unfortunate that the French forces were not able to secure the libraries from these Al Qaida barbarians. Al Qaida and the Taliban are not only anti Islamic civilization, they are anti African civilization and anti Buddhist and anti anything against civilized decency and human culture. Anarchist and barbaric to the extreme and fascists. Yes I agree that burning of books leads to  burning of humans - the Jewish holocaust comes to mind. Totally and utterly disgusted and weeping inside as I consider former President Thabo Mbeki's dreams of African renaissance to be in tatters with this cultural, heritage and historical treasure of civilization lost forever.
