Market GPS | Nigeria: Taking Africa's Giant Seriously. By Robb Young 4 June, 2013. In a new series, Market GPS, BoF looks beyond the BRICs to the next tier of emerging market opportunities. First up, we examine Africa's giant, Nigeria.
s mba's insight:

When a prolific emerging market investor announced last year that there are at least 200 ‘hidden billionaires’ in Africa unknown to wealth watchers, it didn’t take long before Forbes beefed up its coverage profiling the super-rich in Nigeria. It’s easy to see why. Among those who can be documented, Africa’s richest man hails from here as do more than a quarter of the magazine’s current top forty from the continent. Although economists rightfully keep talking about ‘Africa rising’, clearly there is at least one country that is floating closer to the top than the rest.

An African consumer revolution needs African leaders

An African consumer revolution needs African leaders | Africa Entrepreneurship Trend | Scoop.it

I would also go further and say the time has come to challenge the thinking, particularly prevalent in Africa, that the key to poverty reduction lies more in the business of development than in the development of business. I sometimes get the impression people feel that discussing sophisticated brands, products and markets is inappropriate in a continent where poverty is pervasive. I can accept that many Africans don’t have much money. I can’t accept they are any less intelligent or sophisticated consumers than the rest of us. I do believe that by changing our perceptions we can engage with them to build sustainable and equitable new economies.

Lack of skills the reason for small business failure

Lack of skills the reason for small business failure | Africa Entrepreneurship Trend | Scoop.it
A lack of skills, not funding, was the reason why many small, medium-sized and micro enterprises (SMMEs) failed, said University of Pretoria professor Jurie van Vuuren on Friday.
s mba's insight:

A lack of skills, not funding, was the reason why many small, medium-sized and micro enterprises (SMMEs) failed, said University of Pretoria professor Jurie van Vuuren on Friday.

Speaking at a Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa) roundtable dialogue at the Industrial Development Corporation, he said many new small business owners required motivational, entrepreneurial and business skills....... is essential experience for start up to move the business forward.

Kenneth Samuel Baddoo's curator insight, June 27, 2013 12:18 PM

It's very true that the lack of skills, is the foremost obstacle to the growth of startups and SMMEs. I would argue further that in the case of African startups, the main issue is an access to diversified skill and talent. Most companies have global ambitions but are thinking local in their strategy and this is very evident in their choice of hiring and market focus.

s mba's comment, July 24, 2013 1:38 PM
Kenneth, your view is not far from the reality in Africa. For Africa start business to benefit from the current massive economic growth taking place across the continent they MUST start thinking global, and develop strategies that are durable.... Which should reflect from their staffing, budgets, ads etc
