Thespian Thoughts Theatre Review – PATTERNS
“A Triumph”

Patterns may have been written 60 years ago but the corporate politics at the heart of this gripping drama are timeless.

A ruthless business titan brings in a youthful executive in the hope of forcing out the company’s aging vice president and by doing so sets in motion a boardroom battle between conscience and ambition.

Originally a TV movie, this is the script on which Rod “Twilight Zone” Sterling made his name and the stage adaptation by James Reach retains the power and poignancy of the stirring source material.

The cast, costumes, set and sound all perfectly capture the atmosphere of the executive floor of a big corporation in 1955 New York.

James Schendel is especially effective as the nice guy veteran on the way out and so too is Daniel Kaemon as the sensitive newcomer on the way up.

Director Jules Aaron ensures the manners, etiquette and attitudes match the time period ensuring what what goes unsaid is every bit as important as the spoken words.

There are some terrific plays on stage in LA at the moment, including Orphans at Theatre of Note, The Glass Menagerie at The Sherry Theatre and Actors Co-Ops’ just completed An Evening with CS Lewis all contenders for show of the summer, but nothing comes close to Patterns.

This one is a triumph for Theatre 40 and a wonderful way to launch the company’s 50th season in Beverly Hills.

ActorsE Chat with Director, Writer, Professor Salvador Carrasco and host Ron Brewington | Events | Scoop.it
ActorsE Chat is a Live Chat Show on Actors Entertainment, a channel on the Actors Podcast Network, a Pepper Jay Productions LLC
Pepper Jay's insight:

Director/writer Salvador Carrasco was born in Mexico City and now resides in Los Angeles. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in Film and Television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, receiving the Founders Day Honors Award. At NYU he wrote and directed three award-winning short films: Alone with His Void, Marblood, and To Fall in Exile. In 1992 Carrasco and producer Alvaro Domingo co-founded Carrasco & Domingo Films, a film production company based in Mexico City and now also in Los Angeles. They also created the Spanish-language cultural magazine, Litoral, which published a wide range of international writers and artists.

Distributed in Mexico by 20th Century Fox, The Other Conquest (La otra conquista (1998)) became the highest-grossing Mexican film ever at the time of its release. During its run in Los Angeles, The Other Conquest had great box-office success and wide critical acclaim, becoming one of The Los Angeles Times’ Top 10 Films of 2000. LA Times’ critic Kevin Thomas wrote: “Dazzling, Stupendous, Daring! In his bravura feature debut, Carrasco has created nothing less than a superb cinematic vision.” Variety called The Other Conquest “the first 3 million dollar movie that looks like 30!” and in the words of Oscar-Watch’s Sasha Stone: “Carrasco ought to emerge as one of the world’s best directors, taking his place alongside such uncompromising giants as Martin Scorsese and Akira Kurosawa.”

Carrasco is currently developing Hollywood studio projects, among which he is attached to direct The Holy Road (the sequel of Dances with Wolves). He has also directed episodic television, including Nickelodeon’s hit series comedy, Brothers Garcia. As a writer, Carrasco’s essays and poems in both English and Spanish have been published in books, magazines, and newspapers, including The Los Angeles Times’ Calendar section and Book Review. His song-cycle Solamente Sola, written in collaboration with composer Samuel Zyman, has appeared twice on CDs (Island Records and Urtext), has been performed extensively by world-class sopranos (e.g., Ainhoa Arteta), and was described by Fanfare magazine as being “of a Spanish intensity reminiscent of [Spanish poet] García Lorca”.

Carrasco is the 2002 recipient of the Moseley Fellowship in Creative Writing at Pomona College. Deeply committed to education, he has taught film at the University of Southern California and Santa Monica College, and is currently the main directing instructor at The Los Angeles Film School. He is married to English violinist and music supervisor Andrea Sanderson, and they live together in Santa Monica, California with their two sons and daughter: Juan-Salvador, Sebastian, and Cassandra.

ActorsE Chat with Actress Writer Broadcaster Tammi Mac with host Ron Brewington | Events | Scoop.it
ActorsE Chat is a Live Chat Show on Actors Entertainment, a channel on the Actors Podcast Network, a Pepper Jay Productions LLC, with PR-Marketing-Sales by Live Video Inc.
Pepper Jay's insight:

Tammi Mac interrupts your favorite television shows frequently, as she is seen in over a dozen national TV commercials, from Verizon to Capital 1. She dishes the dirt as a recurring guest host on The Logo channel’s The Gossip Queens. She has also set the Los Angeles stage on fire in Don B. Welch’s Idella’s Soul Shack, The Bachelorette Party and August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson. A student of the theatre, Mac has earned a Master of Fine Arts in theatre and has trained with the Groundlings. Her extensive voiceover work includes AARP, Baskin Robbins, State Farm, Union Bank, McDonald’s and the list goes on. Most are familiar with Mac because of her afternoon radio show, Mac and Amiche, which is rated #1 with African Americans in Los Angeles. The show airs Monday-Friday from 4-8pm on Stevie Wonder’s radio station 102.3KJLH FM. As a high school student Tammi Mac began her radio career at Texas Southern University’s radio station, KTSU 90.9 FM, as host of the slow jam show,”Simply Soft”. As an academic scholarship graduate of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, she carries a Bachelors of Science and Arts degree. At Bennett she also continued to soar in her radio success, becoming host of WQMG-FM .97.1′s morning show. Her acting career smiled on her as she set UIL theatre competition records at Jack Yates high school in Houston, Texas under the leadership of Sandra Shelton. While matriculating at the University of North Carlina-Greensboro, Tammi Mac participated in theatre competitions with North Carolina A&T University because of the lack of opportunities for black students in theatrical productions at UNCG. Perservering, she received her Master’s of Fine Arts in theater from UNCG. This well-versed talented, writer, producer, air-personality and actress is now knocking down the doors of Hollywood much like her Southern predecessors, Jaime Foxx, Matthew McConaughey, Isaiah Washington, Chandra Wilson, Debbie Allen and more! Mac also produces radio and television commercials under her production company, MACJACK. Mac is all over Hollywood and is hard to miss, but if you do happen to miss her on 1 of her many commercials or in an LA theatrical production or on the big or small screen you can always hear her daily on her highly sometimes controversial afternoon radio show on 102.3KJLH.

Actors Reporter Movie Review of The Interview

Pepper Jay's insight:

THE INTERVIEW – “smart, silly and sweet”
– Movie Review by Actors Reporter

RATING: 4 out of 5

After all the controversy, threats and headlines surrounding what at the end of the day is just a comedy movie, it’s good to finally see the film and find that it’s actually extremely entertaining.

Along with the many silly gags, there is a smartness to it as well and the movie has some insightful things to say about politics, prejudice and the state of modern journalism.

The story follows the host and producer of a US TV show who land an interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un only to get recruited by the CIA to assassinate him.

There are some interesting acting choices which all serve the film well. Seth Rogen, who also co-wrote and co-directed, solidly plays a tabloid TV show producer striving to be taken more seriously while James Franco, as the host of his show, plays every single scene endearingly over the top and newcomer Randall Park creates an, at times, surprisingly sympathetic Kim Jog Un by bringing depth to the role.

Eminem has a funny cameo at the start, Katy Perry’s Firework song is crucial to the outlandish plot and there’s a joke about Ellen Degeneres which provides one of several laugh out loud moments.

The firestorm which grew up around The Interview has made it the most talked about movie in ages and now we’re finally getting the chance to see it, the talk can maybe turn to how funny, special and sometimes sweet it is to watch.

RATING: 4 out of 5.

Actors Reporter’s movie rating system:

1 out of 5 Terrible. Bomb.

2 out of 5 Disappointing / dull.

3 out of 5 Good. Solid movie.

4 out of 5 Very good.

5 out of 5 Excellent. Instant classic.

Actress Cathryn de Prume and Host Kristina Nikols on ActorsE Chat | Events | Scoop.it
Pepper Jay's insight:

Cathryn de Prume appears opposite Reese Witherspoon in director Jean-Marc Vallé’s Wild, a chronicle of one woman’s 1100-mile solo hike. She also appears in the Britt Robertson-Justin Long- Martin Sheen mystery thriller Ask Me Anything; and she’s a school administrator in the thriller Murder 101.
At the age of 11, against her parents’ will, Cathryn used her babysitting money to enroll in her first acting class. “I wanted to be Lucille Ball,” she says today. “I knew I wanted to be funny.” She then joined an onstage improv group in her native Park Slope, Brooklyn and went on to NYC’s prestigious High School of the Performing Arts.
It was during the summer after her first year in college at SUNY Purchase, that she got her first break – the part of Goldi Lox, opposite Melissa Leo’s Mama Bear, in the indie fantasy thriller Dead Time Stories. She quickly followed that up with the plum part of drugged-out Brita in director Tony Bill’s drama Five Corners, which was written by John Patrick Shanley, and starred Jody Foster and Tim Robbins. After a year on stage in Tony and Tina’s Wedding, Cathryn was cast in CrissCross, a drama that starred Goldie Hawn and was shot in Key West.
Moving to Los Angeles, she quickly got the role of doomed Linda Bailey Brown in the television movie Love, Lies and Murder, which was followed by a starring role opposite Anna Gunn in Down the Shore, a Fox sit-com that lasted 29 episodes.
Cathryn’s additional television credits include: Coach (she played a clueless, money-grubbing cheerleader), Blossom (as Kandy the Polish prostitute), Without A Trace, Grey’s Anatomy, Rules of Engagement and True Blood.
On the feature front, her additional credits include Bloodhounds of Broadway, Navy Seals, Terminal Velocity, Mrs. Winterbourne, The Wedding Project, Scrambled and The Civilization of Maxwell Bright.
Cathryn is currently developing her one-woman show into a television series about her eccentric family.

Pepper Jay's insight:

Media expert, Lisa Caprelli will be discussing her unique strategy of creating a ‘branded’ and well defined vision for artists, which combines all the varied aspects of their talent into a single, multifaceted essence that is proven to attract attention and support from both the industry and the public.

The explosive growth of digital media has created literally thousands of opportunities for talented artists to share their work, vision, and creativity. Their challenge is to direct their vision through creative marketing techniques so that it gets to the producers and audiences who want to see it. Multimedia options provide platforms that allow aspiring talent to digitally structure their ‘star persona’, those indefinable aspects of themselves that make them unique and ‘perfect for the role’, so that they stand apart from the rest of the talent crowd. The answer for artists struggling to be noticed in such a competitive town as Los Angeles may be in creating a ‘brand’ for themselves, as a platform that makes them well known.

Lisa Caprelli is an artist, author, speaker, and business growth expert who has helped numerous businesses, entertainers, and entrepreneurs achieve their goals. As the founder of Go Glossy Public Relations and Media, the author of “Color Your Message,” an Amazon best seller, and host of “The Business Experience Show”, Lisa Caprelli will bring her unique ‘star branding,’ outside-the-box approach and humanistic viewpoint to the public on this fabulous and entertaining webcast. Over her 20 year career, she has interviewed successful ‘notables,’ and brings that insight with her to this conversation.

'Glee's' Melissa Benoist cast as 'Supergirl' with Ali Adler

Melissa Benoist will star in the Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler drama based on the DC Comics character.

CBS and Warner Bros. Television have found their Supergirl.

Glee and Whiplash breakout Melissa Benoist has been tapped to play the iconic DC Comics character, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman).
Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She's still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn't know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she's even given a new moniker: Supergirl.

Benoist becomes the actress to portray the character, who was most recently played on the small screen by Laura Vandervoort on The CW's Superman origin story Smallville.

The Glee actress was one of many actresses to test for the role, edging out The Vampire Diaries/The Originals' Claire Holt, among others, for the part, sources tell THR.

Benoist joined Fox's Glee during season four, as one of McKinley High's new students after the musical's senior class graduated. She was promoted to series regular ahead of season five and had been considered the heir apparent to star Lea Michele's Rachel on the series before the musical was retooled.
Supergirl will not be the first time Benoist has played a superhero. The actress donned a cape as "Woman Fierce" in Glee's "Dynamic Duets" episode in which the glee club channeled their inner super hero. (Watch her performance of "Holding Out for a Hero," below.)

She joins fellow Glee breakout Grant Gustin (The CW's The Flash) to land the starring role in a DC Comics adaptation from WBTV.
Arrow and Flash's Greg Berlanti and his No Ordinary Family cohort Ali Adler (The New Normal) will pen the script and executive produce the drama via Berlanti Productions' WBTV-based banner. Berlanti Productions' topper Sarah Schecter is also on board to executive produce.

Supergirl — which still needs an official series order — could give all five of the broadcast networks superhero-themed series on the air next season, with DC properties on four of the five. Fox has Batman story Gotham — which like Supergirl started with a series commitment; NBC has Hellblazer take Constantine, which will end after 13 episodes; CW has already renewed Flash and Arrow; and ABC, via Disney's deal with Marvel, has Agents of SHIELD and bridge series Agent Carter. For its part, Netflix also has four Marvel series and a mini, starting with Daredevil.

Benoist's credits include awards season darling Whiplash and roles on CBS' Blue Bloods and The Good Wife as well as Showtime's Homeland. She's repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Frankfurt Kurnit.
