7. Afghan refugees in Iran: Afghanistan is the source of one of the world’s largest and most protracted refugee crises, with waves of refugees fleeing the country after the 1979 Soviet invasion, then during Taliban rule in the 1990s, and finally during the last decade of conflict between US-led forces and Taliban insurgents. While much has been written about the 2.7 million Afghan refugees in Pakistan, the presence of some 900,000 registered refugees and 1.4 million unregistered Afghans in neighboring Iran has received less attention. Most of them live in urban areas where, under the current regime, intolerance of the refugees has grown and their children are excluded from mainstream education. Promises to naturalize some of the unregistered refugees have not materialized, and they are often subject to mass deportations. Experts warn that forced mass return of refugees to Afghanistan would further destabilize the country, which has a limited capacity to provide jobs, basic services and security to returnees.

Afghan Refugee was transferred to Hospital after being on hunger strike
Farid Mirzaee, a 24 years old Afghan asylum seeker, was hospitalized after 7 days of being on a wet hunger strike in the tent in the city of Aub due to problems with his kidneys. He has lived in Germany as an asylum seeker since two years ago. He started the strike in respond to inhuman laws on 2 Jul. 12, and today after 7 days of being on wet hunger strike, he has been transferred to a hospital in Ochsenfurt. We, striking asylum seekers in Aub who have been on hunger strike since 7 days ago, are very concerned about Farid’s physical condition and we hope he gets his health back immediately so that he could finish the struggle for refugee’s demands that we started together.
To the government:
Your irresponsibility for asylum seekers’ bad condition in Germany needs genuine action. Farid Mirzaee is one of those many asylum seekers who have sacrificed their health to bring their voice to the society, and it is you who made the situation so hard for asylum seekers and some of them such as Farid have been forced to danger their health in order to be heard. Undoubtedly you are responsible for his health condition.Striking Asylum Seekers of Aub camp 22.07.2012
