Top 10 Evidence Based Teaching Strategies

Dr. Deborah Brennan's curator insight, May 22, 2:58 PM

These strategies are the essential foundation of what all good teachers do.  Every article and book that I have read about school improvement and effective teaching seems for focus on these same strategies.  We know it...but do we do it?  WITH FIDELITY?  I think that is often where it breaks down. These strategies need to be a part of EVERY lesson...EVERY day. They become highly effective when they are implemented consistently and intentionally.  With all teachers are required to do, it is easy to lose focus on intentionally using these effective strategies.

Alfio Gangemi's curator insight, May 24, 8:38 PM

This is probably the best resource I have found for a pre-service and graduate teacher. As the title says it outlines the top ten evidence based teaching strategies and clearly describes each strategy and how and why they are effective. Very useful resource!.

Steve Whitmore's curator insight, Today, 9:39 AM

Which of these strategies could you incorporate into your therapeutic groups?  How do you think they might be helpful?

When you observe students in classrooms, do you see evidence of these practices?

Deep learning. Complex connections are made between previous learning in the face of the need to adapt. Bifurcation enables shifts in perspective, the confident ability to attempt something new, to experiment.

Cognitive schema are our values, attitudes and beliefs, that are transcribed into thoughts and actions. In normal day-to-day life they are relatively resistant to change.

The 21st century has never seen a more advanced mode of learning than what we have now. But even then, students now seem to have trouble in with their comprehension. This learning typology will tell us what the learner can do after a learning experience.

8 examples of transforming lessons through the SAMR Cycle: Emerging education technologies | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it
The SAMR Model for integrating technology into teaching, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, has gained a good deal of exposure in recent years. “SAMR” is an acronym that stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. The SAMR model provides a technique for moving through degrees of technology adoption to find more meaningful uses of technology in teaching and move away from simply using “tech for tech’s sake”.

Connectivism: Learning as a Community

Connectivism: Learning as a Community | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it
In a modern world where knowledge objects are ubiquitous and openly accessible, the roles of educators and learners must evolve to meet the growing needs of the resulting high-paced, digital society. Connectivism is an emergent, net-enabled learning theory that suggests the most important result of a learning situation is the ability of the learner to make connections between distinct ideas using social capital and the affordances of digital networks.

Why Aesthetics Matter to Learning

Why Aesthetics Matter to Learning | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it
One obvious way to influence affect is through visual aesthetics, or the appreciation of an appealing design. Thus, the importance of visual design in learning is gaining in stature and will become increasingly important in years to come.

Via EDTC@UTB
more...
Elaine J Roberts, Ph.D.'s curator insight, May 4, 10:23 AM

Much of this applies to online learning, but aesthetics matter in a brick-and-mortar environment, too. Think about the classroom to which you respond, "Oh! This is nice!" as opposed to the classroom that seems to be losing its battle with clutter. Imagine the impact a confused environment has on a student. Great to have stuff on the wall, but after a while it can become just background and no longer have any meaning. Teachers already work hard to create a valuable and purposeful learning space, so asking them to have a plan for managing the resources and other stuff in the classroom might seem like too much. Except the really good ones are already doing it.
