The reorganizing and reconstructing (a great John Dewey word taking us beyond reorganizing) of School is long overdue. I think we will have to be aware and present in our teaching so as to utilize the most effective means for the learning at hand and the students involved in that learning.

Assessment, grading and rigor: toward common sense and predictable outcomes on tests

Assessment, grading and rigor: toward common sense and predictable outcomes on tests | Affordable Learning | Scoop.it

The problem. schools have to meet standards, and local assessment should prepare kids to deal with the standards as tested by PARCC and SB. But the new tests are harder and more rigorously scored than most local tests. So, scores will have to be low. (Anyone following NAEP results has known this for years, alas.)

This seems to run headlong into a long tradition of grading whereby we do not want to punish kids with low grades (akin to the outrage over sharply-lower school scores on accountability measures this year).

INFOhio Curriculum Toolbox's curator insight, July 21, 3:17 PM

Creating an environment of inquiry in a classroom requires skill, practice and encouragement. First and foremost teachers must understand and believe in the value of inquiry across all subject areas and be comfortable with the inquiry process. This process can be best taught by the school library media specialist in collaboration with the content area teacher so that the inquiry skills are learned in concert with the content. The IMatrix is designed to give teachers and media specialists easy access to resources which not only help explain inquiry, but also help teach inquiry skills to students.

The six Dimensions of Inquiry were created through an environmental scan of various information inquiry models. From these models, the Dimensions of Inquiry were synthesized. The dimensions sometimes overlap or may cycle back to a previous dimension when a different direction is needed. Which of the Dimensions would you like to explore?
